just wondering if anyone else is using both a 40 and 50 mm lens in their kit?
what do you use each one for?
are they not too close to need both?

i can see using both: 40 for street, 50 for landscape and portraits. YMMV.

Yet I'm content with slow 2.8/40mm and fast 1.4/50mm. Latter is also useful with TC7 providing 2.8/100mm (1.2/55mm also should work for this

A pancake 40 and a fast 50 makes sense, although I've been liking the 55mm focal length a bit better than 50 lately.

A lens is not just about focal length. I have a 40mm and a couple 50mm, but more for their own characters rather than the need to have both perspectives. For me 40mm is more like a refined 35mm so I shoot it like a 35mm.

Araakii,
Do you mind elaborating on that ?
I just don't get it.

I have a 40 and a 50, and sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't just lose one in favor of the other. I have the 50/2, and the 40/1.4 is for when I need that extra stop or when I'm on the streets.

i rarely put the 50 on the rd1...i always think i'll use it but rarely do.
same thing is happening with the nikon dslrs as well.
don't do much landscape work and seem to prefer a more environmental portrait...

I have a 28mm Triplet & a c/v 35mm 1.2 which I use on a R-D1. This combo makes it 42mm & 53mm, the triplet is used on mainly on the streets.

I don't have to put my lenses on a crop-factor camera though, so doesn't this post change when you "factor" (haha) that in? It's no longer 40 & 50, but 60 & 75, or?

The 40 is close enough to think of it as a 35. In my kit, the 40 CV Nokton is my fastest lens.

i shoot the 40 as a 35, using the 35 framelines.

yes, there is a crop factor but i tend to still see/use the lenses as their original focal length.
the 40 still looks like a 40 to me...only closer.

My summicron-c 40mm is f/2, while my canon ltm 50mm is f/1.2. Often available light is the deciding factor then.

I kind of want the 40 rokkor-m because it's a high quality lens and is a good bit cheaper than a used biogon but because my ZM "50" is a bit wider I feel compelled to go down that extra 5mm just to keep the difference greater.
if I had all of the M mount lenses I wanted for my M2, I would get a CL + 40 as something tiny to stick in a corner of the lens bag.

I'm also one of those who sees 40 as a tight 35, and shoots it like a 35.

If I have only one lens, I wil go with 40mm. If two lens, will go with 28 +50.
40 and with a fast 50 used to be a selection of mine, but I found the 40/F2 is fast enough in most cases.

i traded away my 28...do not care for it on the rd1 and never used it anymore.
thinking about selling or trading the 50/2.5 now.
i might get a 25 and compare it against the 21, tho i like the 21.
thinking about 2 lenses and 2 bodies for the rd1 kit.
