It is a little depressing to learn about such realities, but it is important that they are known by many people.

That was great David. You have no problem with words, obviously. My mother works as a flight attendant for and my grandfather is a retired pilot from Southwest Airlines. Even though that company seems to take care of their employees better than most, the increased time away from home and the rough and ready scheduling has taken it's toll. My sympathies to you and your colleagues, as I know how it affects the employees and their families. Hopefully your great article and companion photography will bring some of these discrepancies to a brighter light.

An excellent piece of work, David. A very interesting and informative article supported by superb pictures. I just love the shallow DOF in the cover shot and the light in some of the other. The choice of images is perfect, where even an empty hotel corridor tells a bit of the story. And that pistol in the cockpit! Is that common nowadays in the US?? Thank you for sharing by all means.

Thanks. That cover shot was made with an M6 classic and Zeiss Biogon 2/35 lens. It was Ilford film, HP5 I believe.

A small percent of U.S. based pilots are trained and qualified to carry firearms onboard aircraft.

I was gonna ask the same thing. Had no idea that pilots carried weapons nowadays.

But anyway, I still love flying, especially when work pays for the business trip and I get to indulge in a rather expensive lounge and expensive seats that I otherwise wouldn't be able to personally afford.

There is one place in the world I don't like flying into and out of, though. The USA. Uggh...I was there once for a business meeting. The attitude of security staff in the US is just atrocious.

Very nice set of photographs and great article...
I traveled for 17 years and can relate to many of the scenes...walking down a hotel hallway is one of them...watching the ground through a not so clear window and constantly keeping a bag packed is another...
You can also do a similar article on the passenger's point of view...we (the cattle) have also lost any glamour that traveling by air used to have...We flew to Boston last week from Ontario, CA, it has been about two years since I've been on a plane and I was shocked at how things have changed...
