Is there any big reason to get the 7600 over the 7400? I mostly just scan for posting on the web. Maybe for an occasional print or two. I have an Epson 4490 that I can proof scan and do medium format with. I found a NIB 7400 on Amazon for $210 and the seller is only a few miles from my house.

If you scan other than B/W negs, which it will not work on, then the 7600 has the infra red channel for dust removal.
So the answer is, as usual, maybe 😀
That is the only technical difference.

If you have 120 negs, which you say you have then they are shipping later this year a new scanner, see thread on here. Rumoured to be very high quality but no price attached.

They, 7400, are selling brand new with warranty for £159 with free P&P in the UK.

Hi Mark from Plustek here. Not to discourage you from buying anything local but new 7400's from authorized resellers are selling for about $220.

With a new scanner you can get a free upgrade to SilverFast 8. In my opinion SilverFast 8 is much better than the older versions and it is a requirement if you are running on OSX Lion. You can ask the seller to give you the serial number for SilverFast and then check to see if you can upgrade it for free here: https://www.silverfast.com/get_update/en.html

With well exposed negatives or slides, any of these scanners will be fine for your application.

On the specs I read at BH it only lists the 7400 as having 3600 dpi while the others claim 7200, but you say the only real difference is the scratch removal/software?

I have the 7300, and it has the IR dust remove ability, and Mult-Pass, and Multi-exposue (with SF 6.6, but no Multi-exposue in SF 8 ??), Maybe Multi-exposure in SF 8 needs a 64bit capable scanner, not sure... the 7300 has the hardware needed)

So, mine is what the 7600SE is as far the hardware specks. the 7600SE has the same 7200dpi as does the 7400. If you need a calibrated target (color Film), then get the 7600Ai....

BUT, the Only difference is the "Bundled Software" with the 7600SE get the SF Plus SE package that adds Multi-exposure, and Dust Removal, the 7400 may not allow Multi-exposure or Dust Removal -- that is a hardware thing. And the basic SF software does not have the drivers needed anyway.

SO.... I'd look at the 7600SE as a starting point, and if you go to color scanning and you feel you need a targeted film profile, you just upgrade the "SE" software to the "Ai" software.

7400, Vuescan and a cheap bulb blower should do it.
