Friday
I need to get an idea when everyone will be arriving to the area.
I will be traveling home on Friday August 10 and depending on when I arrive into the Asheville Airport can definitely work out meeting those already here in the city on Friday evening.
Saturday
As this is my first meet up with more than one photographer, I need some suggestions as to what normally happens at one of these events.
Some ideas that are going through my head is to meet on Saturday morning for a coffee near where we'd like to photograph.
Then later in the afternoon/dinner time arrange a place to have a happy hour and dinner.
Hopefully finish in time to shoot some more in the evening for those that like to shoot in low light.
If you want free music:

Maybe a ride up on to the Blue Ridge Parkway?

I'm happy to be of assistance, planning or otherwise, as needed.
I just pm'd Chris.
Shindig is great and camera friendly. Downtown on a Sat night will be hard to beat in terms of the density of things to do (and eat).
And I second Duane's question: what does a group normally do at a meetup? We've enough time to plan anything desired.

Typically, it is whatever we want to do...
Most people can only commit to one day during the weekend, so Saturday morning for breakfast is a good place to start. Photographers are a friendly bunch, but I have found that when shooting, most tend to shoot alone or go in different directions based on their individual interests with a couple of meeting points for eats or libations, especially in late afternoon.
We plan on coming up early Saturday morning and then heading back to Atlanta before dark. Really looking forward to meeting all of you and getting some shooting in during the day.
I have found that most get-togethers that are simple work the best, we are not that hard to please!

The girlfriend and I are making a weekend of it, we are heading down Friday night. I am up for whatever you guys want to do on Saturday. Any of us that will be there in the evening can stick around for either of the events Duane suggested.

I'm thinking this place might be a good meeting point as its centrally located in the heart of Asheville and has some good ratings:

Hey I know I said I can't make it, but a bit of recommendations having been to Asheville several times:
Just walking around the downtown is cool, especially at night. It's pretty target-rich. Pack Square is known as the center of the town I guess, but there sometimes are things going on in the little park space across from Tupelo Honey as well. BTW, I highly recommend Tupelo Honey for lunch/dinner if you can get in, which is hard. I once was there and saw the cooks break out in singing along with the whole of "Subterranean Homesick Blues" when it came on the sound system. And the food's great. Laughing Seed is also great. If you think vegetarian=lettuce, this place will rock your world.
I have not been to a Shindig, but your choice there is easy. Following the link for Frampton, it turns out he's $125 a seat.
(And major rock star shows usually are not camera-friendly -- it's all that "my record company owns the rights to publish my likeness so if you take a photo it's piracy" etc.)
Avoid the Biltmore. It is a tourist trap and very expensive. Granted, once you're in, and looking at each room, each room is interesting. But overall, the whole experience has been so over-choreographed and Disneyfied that it's surreal. And did I mention expensive...
If you do want to go out of downtown, consider going over to the River Arts District. Gritty, artsy (DUH!), etc.

Okay, let's see if we can settle the date...it is currently set for the weekend of August 10,11. IIRC...
Probably too late to change it unless there is agreement with everyone and communication is done well. I am open to anything as we are doing a day-trip, with a possibility of staying overnight somewhere within an hour's drive.

We're getting ready to make reservations--not only for us, but for our pups at Camp Bow-Wow!
So let us know soon.
Also--Dave--could you work up at list of cell phone numbers for everyone?
I'm not sure Janis and I can make breakfast on Saturday, but we'll be there mid morning..
Thanks!

Paul, sure, I will need everyone who wants to give out their cell numbers to PM me and I will then compile and send out a list.
Also, unless we make a change of the date by midnight tomorrow night (Friday July 20th), we need to lock it in for the weekend of August 11/12.
Duane, looks like we have some really good suggestions and if you want to complete the itinerary and post it as the official one, please feel free to move forward.

Update
For those making reservations, the meet is on for the weekend of August 11th..correct? That is less than three weeks away!
Okay, so where and when do we meet in Asheville on Saturday?
Also, I have received cell phone numbers from only two of the group...so, let's get moving!

We should get up to Asheville by mid-morning on Saturday, the 11th.
Since many of us have not met, and don’t have each others cell numbers, I suggest that we each send our info to Dave Lackey (via RFF pm). Dave could then distribute the contact info, again through the RFF pm system a day or so before the meeting, to those that have said they would attend.

Barry (blw) has been busy riding the bike for awhile now and was unaware of the meet. He told me there was no reason not to make the 2-hour trek. Hope he will sign up soon.
