Film photography book for 13 year old ?

I'm mystified anyone that age would be interested to be honest ... he does realise the OM-2 can't upload images directly to facebook? 😀

I bought my daughter a Canonette when she was 11. She's 16 now, develops and prints her own stuff in the local community college darkroom (even some color), and complains like all the old codgers here about the impending demise of film. 😀

She would love to make a career out of photography and wet darkroom work, but doesn't see much money or future in either.


edit - forgot to mention a book... I have a copy of the National Geographic Photography Field Guide "Secrets to Making Great Pictures"; she picked up some basics from that.

Kodak Pocket Guide to 35mm Photography
Fits in a jeans pocket, all the elementary stuff in one place, and some nice photos as well.
And a bunch of film of course.

I'd say give him a bunch of film and offer to develop/print them together with him. I can't imagine any 13 year olds diving into photography manuals unless they were bookworms to begin with...

Let's see he's 13 and most photography books contain nudes, so he'll love them all right?

... I was going to say something like that 😀 Trouble and Strife by David Bailey springs to mind, I'd have welcomed that at his age ...

Take him to the library, or to a bricks-and-mortar bookstore, and browse the stacks. Like others have mentioned, I would just give him some film and let him run with it; provide direction when he seems like he needs it, and answer questions when he has them. If the hobby is going to catch fire, he needs to find his own inspiration and desire.

And others have had snappy lines about computers and uploading to facebook, but I'll just say this: it's great to see a person that age taking up a hobby that does NOT involve computers, electronics, LCD screens, and social networking (except the face-to-face kind).
