Minolta MC 21mm f4 Rokkor-QH w/finder.

I just won this lens and I am excited to get it. I have been looking for one of these for a long time, to use on my SRT101 bodies (which have the necessary mirror lockup). I have sold off my Canon RF stuff, and this lens is a replacement for my prized 19mm F3.5 Canon. I am hoping it has a similar "look" in shooting with it.

In addition to the camera lens, included in this deal is a -mint- black SRT101 body with case and box/paperwork. And a 50mm MD Rokkor.

Anybody here using the Minolta 21mm?

I used something similar years ago, but it was a Nikkor that used an adapter for Leica M. Vignetted pretty heavily, but I liked the "look" very very much. Very decent performer. I sold mine to get a 21/3.4 Super Angulon.

In color and B&W it looks to me to be an extremely good lens. Will be interesting to compare the results with my 21mm F2.8 (retrofocus) MC Rokkor-NL. Looks like it works OK on the XK too, which is a good thing for me. 😀

Wide lenses interest me as well, although I have none wider than the late MD 28/f2.8. I need to use it more!

I am hoping it will be quiet and stealthy-small on my SRT's. Pictures on Flikr sure do look Killer. Great for when I am shooting street, and Jonesing for a RF-like (external viewfinder) experience.

I use such a lens on LTM/M cameras with an adapter Minolta to LTM, usually on a Standard Leica or Bessa L. I like the lens. I also use the Canon 19/3.5 with Canon Adapter B. The images from the Rokkor look vintage and I add some contrast with PS.

I would be extra careful when trying to use this lems on a digital camera since its protruding glass sy damage the sensor.

I just checked on ebay; there are many sellers of an adapter Rokkor to M for about $50-$80.

Looks sharp to me, too. I see alot of really fine detail in your photograph.

Spoke to a gentlemen in Italy today, he says he used it on an SRT and CLE, and really thinks it is a great lens. Have not heard any negatives about it.
Not seeing any falloff in the corners, either.

Mine is in shipping right now, Can't wait to get it 😛

Thanks for your comments. By all accounts I have found, the Minolta 21mm is also a very decent performer. Looking forward to getting it into my hands by the end of the week.

The lens is a relatively inexpensive 21mm lens for its quality, and it is a non-retro focus lens, allowing a better design than what you get with a retro focus lens.

A RF user may be considering the CV 21mm lens, and if money is not a restriction, a Leica or Zeiss 21mm lens.

Hi Raid,
I do already have the Minolta MC Rokkor-WL 21mm F2.8, which has a floating front element, and has a reputation for being exceptionally good. I think this lens replaced the old 21mm F4. I do recall TomA saying his copy was soft, but that could be a not-so-good sample maybe? Anyway I think this lens is interesting and collectable (for me!) and it is great to have a choice.

I would be interested to learn whether the 20/2.8 gives you better results. An advantage of the non-retro focus design is that there is no protruding glass element, and the lens can be used on a digital camera, such as the M8 or M9.

Here is the new 21mm F4 MC W Rokkor-QH. Looks like new to me.
The matching 21mm Minolta Viewfinder is super clean, easy to look through. A bit of barrel distorion, but not bad at all.
Parallax marks in the viewfinder for close-up shooting, no doubt. I am very pleased.

The SRT black body is the absolutely cleanest I've ever seen, like it just came through a time tunnel.
Absolutely not a mark on it anywhere, it even has the original import stickers on it.

Now to get out and test it! 😉

I did have a long time ago and was less than impressd. But, admittedly, it was a somewhat beaten up sample and I did run it against my Super Angulon - which is better. I suspect that it is something like my Super Takumar 20mm f4.5. Sme extensive edge fall off - but the icing on the cake is the extreme close up facility.

Here is my favorite freshly overhauled SRT101 red ringneck lizard body, loaded with Eastman 5222 XX film and the new 21mm F4 Rokkor.

I think this thing is going to be great for "grab shooting" with the external finder, sunny 16 photography. It's really compact (unlike the 21mm F2.8 MC), and with the mirror locked up, it is a bit more "stealthy". And I can use it on my two SR-M motorized bodies, with the finder (since it's SRT style) and has MLU. Not sure about the XK, I may need another external finder, to use with that.

Handles just like the 19mm Canon IMO. Out shooting XX today.

One of the things that I enjoy doing with my equipment, is restoring it back to fully usuable condition. In this case, the Optical Viewfinder was quite wobbly and loose on my favorite SRT101 body. After taking it off and studying the design, I tightened three small screws on the underside of the finder, and applied three small drops of nailpolish, to ensure it all stays together for a while. But it was still "chattery" and still not fitting right to me. After more studying I determined that there must have been a strip of adhesive foam on the back underside (there were faint remnants of that), but also, a foam "adhesive pad" under the shoe itself, (covering the three screws), to tighten the whole thing up. After cutting adhesive foam material with my rotary trimmer, and trying different thicknesses of material, I am confident that it is now as good as it can be. No more "chatter" and quite solid on the SRT. Things like this little project are -fun- to figure out and solve.

This lens is GREAT for point-n-shooting. Set the exposure, focus hyperfocally, using the DOF scale, and fire. The 21mm F2.8 is not a point-n-shoot lens, in my opinion. It also tends to attract alot of attention IMO.

Today I processed eight rolls of Eastman XX 5222, about three of the rolls were shot with the 21mm F4 on my favorite SRT101, as a knock-around point-n-shoot. Set the aperture, focus hyperfocally, and shoot. Very spontaneous and fun to use. With the external viewfinder, it is a rangefinder-like experience to use. Seems a very suitable replacement for my old Canon 19mm F3.5 which is now history.

Negs look great! It is -very- sharp as near as I can tell, by eyeballing it. I think this lens is a winner. I am absolutely delighted.
