jamie, the manager of the walgreens i use said their machinery is amortized, so processing/scanning is all gravy. he figures it is good for 4-5 more years at least.
Paul,
The question is really more like "Will places like Walgreens want to continue to dedicate space and staff time to something that seems to be so, well... 'old school'?"
If this industry move away from film was going to be gradual over 20 or 30 years, I'd probably hang in there with it. But these days it seems that corporations shift allegiances over night; bailing out on any business venture that's not producing maximum profit NOW! Look at Kodak: the rumors are that their film business was still profitable, but apparently not profitable enough. So they toss it all in the ditch.
And in the face of the digital juggernaut, what company wants to be left holding the bag (of lots of film production infrastructure) when demand for film falls to miniscule amounts?

just came back empty handed from a walgreen's store in a north Denver suburb.
no sale on any film in that store. they did not even have any 800 films. there were some 4-packs of ultramax 400 for $16 a box. I might try some other stores.

jamie, i'm just going on what one manager was kind enough to tell me. his machinery is paid for. his staff is cross-trained on processing. the store makes money on processing (there almost always are 1-3 customers in line to leave film or pick up negs/cd/prints). then there's the whole other set of customers who have walgreens make prints from digital files.
i'd guess there is some independence on store by store processing. i'd guess also that as long as it makes money, it will be there. even if film goes away, there may remain strong enough demand for inexpensive prints from digital files to maintain profits.
now then, when walgreens puts in a new store just about anywhere, i'd guess there would not be any film machinery, and probably no film. machinery for prints from digital? could be. wolf/ritz is closing. not everyone likes to gets prints made and mailed from shutterbug or such. lots of people still bring in CDs and flash drives to use walgreens computers to choose prints from digital files.

FYI, last summer when they maked down the house brand film to $1 a roll (24), they were marked regular price but when they were scanned, they ring in as $1, so if the sign say $x make sure $x is really $x....

Last year when the rumor was going around that Walgreens was quitting the 1 hr film developing I asked if this was true & they told me no way & MOF they just had a division meeting & film developing was making a substantial profit. The girl who normally develops my film said that whoever develops the film gets a 25 cent bonus per roll. I thought that was cool of Walgreens to offer that for their employees.

No luck for me either... UltraMax was $15.99 and Gold 200 was $13.99. Wallgreens brand 400 was $10.99. All these were 4-packs and I believe the rolls were 24 exp.
Oh well, thanks for the heads up anyway!

Just a heads up for any San Francisco folks.. went on a little bike ride to the Walgreens to the following stores:
Fell & Gough
Van Ness & Market
Market & 9th
Polk & California
Polk & Broadway
Franklin & Post
Fillmore & Bush
Divis & O'Farrell
Market near Sanchez
Only one store had two boxes of 800 on sale. The bottom four were out, and don't remember what the situation was for the top five, but they weren't on sale at the time (maybe they didn't get the memo?).
Good luck!

That 400cn is a nice deal. Our local WG only has the house brand 200 or 400 and the Ultramaxx 800 4 packs. That and disposable cameras. The section is getting REALLY tiny.
