I recently put up a Nikon lens for auction on ebay - Paypal only, will only send the lens to Paypal address. Someone from the Czech Republic (100% positive feedback) asked me if I'd be willing to add a "Buy It Now." Since it doesn't cost anything to do that, I agreed. He pulled the trigger and paid promptly via Paypal.

However, when I checked the postal address on the eBay generated email ( Congratulations! Your item sold!) the name, email and postal address does not match the name, email and postal address in Paypal.

I'm 99.9% sure it's a scam, and am about to refund the money to the "victim."

My question - it's not about the money (like I said, I already plan to refund it), but I'm curious, is there any possible way this is legit?

Write him, ask what body he has, which exposure mode he prefers, or any other question to see if he is a real photographer.

I've used this approach to verify a couple of times and to weed-out real crooks from Nigeria in another instance.

This is quite possibly legit. I have seperate addresses on EBay (India), Paypal (Singapore) and actual delivery (Hong Kong), simply because I move around a lot and it's not as easy as I thought to change addresses on these accounts.

I would recommend you email him via his PayPal email address to confirm.

I did that -the problem is: two different names; both addresses are, however, in the Czech Republic. We'll see if the Paypal owner responds.

I've had that a couple of times. Both times were, as far as I could confirm, someone using their parent's Paypal account to shop for things using their own Ebay account.

I have had different addresses on PP and eBay several times, since I have moved around a lot, and simply forgot to update on both sites.
Differing names could be due to him buying the lens for someone else; for instance I bought a big batch of fishing baits for my computer illiterate father via eBay and had it sent directly to him.

I sometimes pay for my girlfriend w/ my account so different names in ebay and paypal

Apparently, that's what happened here (except the lady paid for her boyfriend's purchase), and I've been asked to ship the lens to the Paypal verified address. So it's all good - glad to see it was NOT a scam. :)
