Lens wisdom of the day (the century)

my regrets have centred round focal lengths more than anything else.
the 75 has a strong pull but i must have bought and sold about 3 or 4 of them.
no pull from the 90.
i love the 40 but sometimes think i 'should' have a true 35.
i always think i should like a 28 more but a 25 seems to 'make more sense' to me.
Good grief! Why? Different cameras?

Cheers,

R.

On my scale of life's regrets, these chunks of metal and glass fall pretty low.

Still, I was a fool to sell my M9 and lenses. It seemed perfectly sensible at the time. Doesn't it always?

Helen,

Sadly I agree with your comment.

I hope you realize that my posting was an exaggeration that is based on what I observed in the world today. I was being over-the-top.

While we're at it, why throw *anything* out ;)

Had this problem a ways back. At the end of the Cold War a friend of mine acused me of single handedly of downsizing a major well known U.S. aerospace company. All I was doing was garbage picking through the waste. I tried to recycle as much as possible through my friends. It was all part of Reaganomics. The waste of taxpayers money was unbelievable.

There was a term back then in the silicon valley called "dumpster diving" (if i remember correctly), in reference to looking for the good stuff that high tech companies threw away that could easily be re-sold:)

Do not sell your lenses, you will always regret it. My two cents from ugly experience.

not so with me. i have sold four leica M lenses and one rollei M-compatible lens--and i only regret selling one. which one? perhaps, surprisingly, the rollei 80mm ... :bang:

It was shameful that a Fortune 500 Company that was the fourth largest aerospace company in the U.S. would not try to recover any costs. At the time they proceeded to empty buildings so that they could be sold.

Meanwhile tens of thousands of people, including me, got laid off as part of the downsizing. Profits were put ahead of people and the looting of taxpayer money was profound. Stealing was sponsored at a corporate level and condoned by the government, all paid for by the taxpayer. Sound familiar?

I was only shifting through the garbage.

Oh yeah. Happened to me three times. And a posterboy for this kind of economic malpractice is running for office. It's all on how they pitch the B-S

BTW, wisdom is found by learning from one's mistakes.

I sold many lenses I regret, and there are many lenses I regret not buying...

I sold my Leica lenses. Don't regret it one bit. Not just because I made money (and could have sold for even higher prices but didn't), but because my photography doesn't need them.
