Using AutoISO, while remaining in creative control - blog post link

Hi all,

I've written a post over on my blog about how I've started to use AutoISO on my Leica M-Monochrom in more controlled way. I've never really written any technical blog posts before, so you might find it a bit crap, but never-the-less I thought it was worth sharing... never know, you might even find it useful!

Well, I can see it works for you, but I find shooting in manual with me choosing the correct exposure the most accurate way of exposing. I see no need for the camera to correct this. For the same reason I see no need to introduce a bias by dialing in a permanent EV compensation.

For the Monochrom it can be shown that underexposing and boosting exposure in raw conversion gives no worse results than increasing the ISO, if anything it is slightly better. There is a case to be made for remaining at base ISO and underexposing as needed.
Try it. Expose a shot correctly at 5000 and then dial the ISO back to 320. Shoot with the same settings as the 5000 shot and boost exposure in your raw converter. The result will surprise you.

Firstly thanks for taking the time to read my post and reply here, really appreciate it.

For me, its not about correctly exposing (I'd rather let the camera do it), but more reducing the number of controls I need to adjust for given lighting changes. That said when I shot the M6, I did have to do full manual, although I am sure the apparent latitude of film saved me a few times.

Interesting, I'll have to have a go at that!

Sounds interesting, I'll have to try it with the M9 and see how it works.

I've worked with aperture priority and auto ISO for years with various cameras, riding the min shutter speed and max ISO settings along with the EV compensation control. It's a fluid way to shoot, depending on the particular camera's controls and operation. With the M9, tho, I tend to just switch to manual if I need to fuss with the EV compensation much.
