U can turn off all sounds if u wish. U will hear the real shutter though. Jamie PillIar was next to me in Oakland when I took a shot, he remarked that it was a pretty quiet shutter. It is quiet enough I tend not to worry about it.

If want absolute quiet, then u need to a camera like the Ricoh gxr or pentax q which has an electronic shutter or a leaf shutter like x100.

The shutter noise is not artificial, it´s real. However quite well dampened, in fact slightly less prominent than my M4-2.
