I just got myself a silver M9

Hey guys

This is a bit pointless I guess, but I just can't help but express my joy. 😉
I got myself a M9 today, found one used in a shop with 3 months warranty, sold new in 2011 and with ~7700 shutter actuations on it. Seemed like a pretty nice deal to me, nice exterior etc.

Unfortunately with the Swedish winter it was dark when I got home, so I've only managed 4 test shots at different high ISOs. I can tell already though that the pixel peeping sharpness is just great even at higher isos. It's like i've found my home in a way. 🙂 Also, I actually find ISO2500 better than I expected so far, I just like the way Aperture handles the noise, so that is nice, was prepared for a bit of a let down with that.

When I bought my M6 I had a bit of a funny story to share on how I purchased it, and for the fun of it I'll share this story as well with the M9;

I'm sure a lot of people are like me, I've purchased several different cameras but inside what I really wanted was the M9. So this is kind of like reaching a goal in a sense, finally getting what I actually want. 🙂

I had my doubts regarding spending the money, but after having a talk with a friend and my girlfriend just before christmas I concluded that I only live once and decided to get one.

Just the day before I had found this silver one online, but the ad was from a local store, so I sent them an email asking about the warranty on used items. This was the first day of christmas where every store is closed, so I have waited for 4-5 days to get a reply.

I got that reply this morning and had already decided and waited for today so I could go and check it out. I asked my brother to come along just for fun, which led to me having to wait for him to get off work. So my plan to be there when they opened at 9 kind of fell through and we arrived there about 12.30 instead.

So I walk in and tell the guy that I want to check the camera and he replies "It was sold today, it's already in the postal office for delivery". And I kind of died a little on the inside, I think I even cursed a bit right then and there.

We talked for a bit, then we left the store to go and fix some other things. On the way back we stopped at a gas station, and I had to send an email right then to a guy selling another M9, which I did. 🙂

So then we drive back to my home town (the store is in the city next to where I live) and walk into a different shopping mall.

Just as we get out of the car I wanted to see if that other guy had responded to my email, but instead it turns out that I have an email from the first shop, telling me that I could come and look at the camera.

This was of course a bit confusing, and at the same time I got some texts from my girlfriend, so I tell my brother "we have to just stop here for a bit, theres too much **** going on at the same time now". 🙂

Anyway, I called the store back and asked what was going on, and it turns out that the guy replying to emails had taken the camera off the shelf when I sent my first email, and the guy behind the counter that I was talking to in person though it had been sold.

So, I went back again, and got it. 😉

Tomorrow I'll go out and shoot and share my first shot, hehe.
 
Great story! It all worked out in the end! I'm currently saving up for a digital M after finding that I enjoy the rangefinder experience so much. I'n a few months, I hope to have a post like this of my own. 🙂
 
Congrats on the new camera!

I am not at all surprised you like the Aperture rendering of ISO 2500. I have the M8 myself and have no problem with ISO 1250 without noise reduction. The M9 to me looks about one stop better.

It's interesting, I remember when I started using aperture a while back how I instantly preferred the way it handles noise compared to my brief test of Lightroom.

The thing is I hate noise reduction, but I also hate color noise. Aperture has a way of suppressing / converting color noise so that it becomes more uniform, and I'm fine with that kind of noise.

Congratulations. Classic Leica livery that will wear well. Not a serious looking camera. My silver M9-P is usually mistaken for a 50 year old M2. Thanks for the reference to Aperture and noise. I'm not happy with noise reduction in Lightroom: I'll try Aperture which I've got but don't like.
 
Oh! I want one so badly. I think and hope I will get one soon, maybe in February or March. It's going to be difficult to do, but I keep telling myself the same kind of things: "Just get one. Forget what it costs. You'll be glad you did. If you don't, a year from now you won't remember what you did with the money instead."

Yeah you have a point. My biggest issue so far has been psychological in the sense that I care a lot about what others think, but it becomes worse because I just imagine what they'd think; "why does he spend that kind of money on a camera when he's not a professional" and stuff like that. It was after a friend told me "no on cares what you do with your money" I was able to make th decision to buy one.

The there is also the fact that I've bought and sold an X100 and an rd-1 and bought but not sold an m6 - but what I've really wanted all along is an M9.

So now I've just put up my dslr kit for sale, should I miss macro I can get a smaller m43 or something for that specific purpose. I am not going to have a 5d and lenses in a bag just for the odd macro shot. But it hasn't been until now that I have the M9 that I was completely fine with eventually parting with the canon, I think because I didn't want to lose a full frame digital.

What is funny though is that I've had this purchase on my mind for years, and lately it's been the it's been the only thing on my mind. But now after having it for a few hours, the only thing I can think about is a noctilux haha. But that isn't going to happen, there is where I draw my personal line. 🙂
 
Enjoy the feeling as long as possible! since it will disappear in time....
Two weeks back I got that same feeling...when I sold my M8.2 for a very nice price....
I'll wait for the M to come out on the market before stepping back into digital (not sure which digital M to get)......in the mean time enjoying the use of film ....
 
congrats on the purchase. I've found my M9 to be a finicky beast (mine came needing a DAG rangefinder adjustment, plus a couple of my lenses are very spotty on focusing). But there is a definite magic when everything aligns.
 
For the fun of it I wanted to share two of my absolutely first images now that we have some daylight. 🙂

I just woke up, had to go and get some breakfast, so I took the camera with me just to do some snaps and see what it looks like at ISO160. It's fantastic (the camera, not the shots).

Along with momentary buyer's remorse related mostly to your unworthiness and not so much your profligacy, can come a drop in the quality of your shots till you forget about the precious M9 and just treat it like another camera.

I guess I need to get more inspired.

Yeah, that's what I finally did a couple of months back. I NEARLY bought an M9 in 2010, and I would have likely saved money, rather than going on a two year merry-go-round of cameras and gear since then, only to ultimately just end up at the M9, anyways. Doh!
