Looking for the compact hood for that lens. Minimal finder blockage is a must. I have S-42 hood with adapter but it vignettes. Any thoughts?

The 50/1.5 hood vignettes very little. No matter when using slide film.

actually i could do with knowing this too. i'll wait here for an answer.
I do not believe there is a Canon hood designated for use with this lens. The front element is recessed quite a bit, perhaps in most cases one is not necessary. Otherwise, a hood from Heavystar on eBay should work. Find one designated for wide angle lenses and you should be good to go.

I've tried 40-40.5 ring from heavystar - it's not screws in fully and also vignettes with 40.5 straight vented hood.

I've tried several possible solutions including some wide-ish step up adapters but every time I ended up with vignetting. I think the lens was designed to be used without a hood. Even a normal size filter causes vignetting.

Correct. I did a fair bit of research on this, and that is my understanding too. If you must want to add a hood (like me), I found that the Canon silver hood series VI for 35mm f2.8, 50mm f1.8 and 35mm F3.2 works very well with an adapter, which I found at local camera shows. The only downside is that the hood is rather rare, and a little pricey.

I use this lens without a hood and haven't had any problems so far.

I use lens hoods for almost all of my lenses, but not for this lens.

Top tip. the 40mm Aftermarket hood for the Fuji X10 fit the Canon 35/2 and work great, No vignetting. They aren't as deep as others and do not require an adapter which would always add to the length.
I tried for over a year to find a hood to fit ( I have access to hundreds of vintage hoods at work and they always vignetted till I tried one of these. )
Regards Chris.

Agreed, and as Rover stated the lens is recessed, and so a hood is not essential. However, there are folks like me who want to use a hood anyway. And how cool is it to have a silver hood with a black lens

I have used a vintage 40mm Walz vented hood, originally intended for 1 of the Canon 50s, & never noticed any vignetting.

Thank you! Do you have a photo of this combo? I think this hood significantly blocking 0.72 finder.

I found a rectangular Canon series vi hood which fits. A little work with a dremel and some matt black paint means no vignetting. As a happy accident you can fit l39 filters between mount and hood

Since the glass is recessed, I only use a 40mm to series vi adapter with no hood. No vignetting, helps shade the lens some, keeps it small in use, and keeps my big fingers out of the picture area.
