XE1 Arrived - Loving it - Photos and M-Lenses

Hey All,

Glad to see you guys are sharing photos and still discussing... I'm sorry I seemed to forget about this thread, but I posted a review on Steve Huff's site and have been busy trying to answer points over there, plus I've been battling a bit of a stomach bug all week.

Excuse the crappy subject, but he was the only one that would sit still... I did a little test tonight with the XE1 and bouncing the built-in pop-up flash, which seemed to work quite well. These are straight out of the camera. If the white balance seems a little "cold" it's just because my ceiling is painted a nifty teal blue in that room. LOL

So far I seem to have settled on the Provia setting for most things, and I have NR turned down to -2... I like the quality of the files SO MUCH this way. I'd be interested to hear how the rest of you set the NR setting.

I did get to test out the 18mm f/2 on Saturday in the city. I posted these in my SH review linked above too...

No, it's not as good as the 35mm f/1.4 lens, but that's really it's problem isn't it? The 35 is just SO good the 18mm doesn't stand a chance when being compared... but it certainly seems good enough to me.

Hi.

I like the 18mm for the compactness and the focal length as well.

Why is it getting soft in the corners?
It's the automatic distortion correction that's written also into the RAWs.
If you open the RAWs in RPP (the last beta should work with the X-E1) you'll see the amount of distortion this lens produces. I don't like that hidden picture processing that much. Often, I like a little bit of distortion with wide angles as it seems somekind of natural to me.

Is it bothering me that much? No, the XF18 is still a keeper for me. Don't like pixelpeeping that much...
 
Amy- Interesting observation regarding the setting of NR turned down to -2. I may try that on my x100. I also agree that provia is a good setting for most images.... enjoy the insight while I wait for the XE-1 to hit the stores to try it out.... dan

I have using this setting on my camera for a while. It really does work well.

Btw last night amazon U.S. had the xe1 in stock according to Fuji rumors.

When I saw the title of this post I began to get interested. Then I realised it wasn't about the classic Minolta XE1 but just another digital computer. 🙁

Why can't Fuji come up with a different combination of letters/numerals? Never mind - each to his/her own!
 
Great shots Amy. I just picked up the x-e1 with fuji 35mm yesterday. I'm curious what in camera settings you prefer.

1) AF speed is way faster than the manual focus on my Mamiya 7. Its considered to be slower than the autofocus on the OMD but don't worry, as long as you are not shooting flying birds and high speed trains you will catch your desired object.
2) use the manual focus ring and look on the screen. You will find all info on what distance you are focusing.
 
Considered slower? I own both the OMD and the XE-1. In AF, the OMD will run rings around the XE-1. The XE-1 is anemic, even with the recent firmware update. The quality of the files is outstanding though. Not only from the XE-1, but from the OMD as well. I do love how the XE-1 handles. It is most Leicalike in handling of any camera other than a Leica itself.
 
Damn it you guys! Just when I thought I was satisfied with my gear, the X-E1 is trying to pull me back to digital since giving it up in 2009! Plus being able to use my LTM lenses, and get the 18/2 as a substitute to my GR1? *drool*
 
Its been a bit of a struggle, but I have been street shooting with XE-1 on a project I have been working on for quite awhile. Processing is minimal as the files, even in RAW, need very little tweeking. I embellish in Photoshop as I would in the darkroom. These were taken with the 18/2.8. It is quite a good optic to say the least.
