+1. I always keep them for a couple additional reasons.
1-I like personally like "complete" packages for my cameras, stereos, etc.
2- those who save the box and paperwork tend to "respect" the equipment a bit more than those that dont, and translates into taking better care of the equipment. I try to only buy from these individuals, b/c I am one of them.
 
I find the worse thing I seem to lose or dismiss is the drivers for various devices I've bought ... luckily most manufacturers make these available on their sites for people who can't seem to hang on to (or find) them when changing computers etc.
 
It depends. I don't care if I get an item w/o box for a good price. But if I happen to buy with a box and papers I always keep it (in case I sell later on).
 
I purchased a Nikon F on E-bay two weeks ago, when it arrived last week it was packaged not only in its original box, but also in the original outer Nikon box. I think it's pretty cool to have these along with the camera. Not too many people would keep boxes for 50 years.

Agree. I bought Olympus 35 LC with the original box, warranty card (expired a few decades ago), purchase receipt, unopened pack of lens cleaning tissue/paper and Olympus ad brochure... :) pretty cool. No practical use, right, but it's a little bit like an archaeology...
 
Yes I try to keep it all when I get a camera, in case I what to resell it later or
just to keep the unused accessories all together.

I think you've either misunderstood my (admittedly flippant) response, or taken it out of context.

In my case, if I purchase a camera or lens to use, then that's what I intend to do with it. I therefore have no need of the box it came in, as I'm not planning on reselling or collecting it.

I purchased the contents of the box to take pictures with, not the box.

I do keep boxes and any paper that came with it on new items, I do resell stuff every few years (with digital), Bodies mainly... just updating or upgrading. So having that stuff tends to attract more buyers. Lenses... I buy used 90% of the time to save money. So, with lenses, makes no difference. S# on boxes?... All the new cameras I have bought, had a cutout in the box where the card inside was placed to show the S# on the card itself.
 
Boxes and/or instructions may not sway me to buy an item, but I do like it when I buy something and it comes in its original packaging. It shows that the body or lens was well cared for, and I usually decide to continue the tradition, so I keep boxes and stuffing with until selling.

At one time I purchased a Nikon F5 body off eBay, sold by someone who seemed a bit gruffy and difficult. The camera (which was only described as "mint") came in its original box, with plastic bag, inserts and all the bits and pieces that it sold with. Opening it was delightful... it even smelled new! I had to send a note to the seller to thank him for taking such good care of his camera, and also learned not to assume things based on the tone of an e-mail message.
 
Boxes and accessories are good for resale, as has been mentioned a few times here. Especially so for vintage gear, but even for recent stuff.

Whether it is digital camera gear or iPads or iPhones, I always keep the packaging because I know I'm just renting/borrowing the gear, when it comes down to it. It's just a matter of time before I move to something else, so why not get the highest resale.
 
I'm not talking about pure resale value. Ofcourse it never hurts but I was wondering how many people actually care to have these things.

As some have mentioned, there is a correlation between having the original stuff and condition. Some actually like these things and some find instructions useful.

I would spend more for caps and hoods but not really a box because I do not like having boxes on display and I just keep them under my bed or in my closet anyways.
 
Put another way, would you pay more to get a used camera in a box and hard copy instructions?

Hard to see why you would. I strongly prefer digital manuals and even though I keep boxes to resell things, I don't care whether I get one or not when I buy.
 
I always keep boxes, paperwork etc. Resale is definately easier. Likewise for a matched numbered box with Leica vintage gear. Financially it makes sense.
There's a divide in people here, one group that never sell anything couldn't care less, the other group who trade and change regularly know it makes sense to keep boxes.
 
In the long run you may get a few dollars more for having everything (case, instructions, strap, cables, etc...) but in the end the quality of the piece you're selling is more important.
