jesus, everybody knows they're called FYPS as in 'fried yellow potato sticks'.

is this discussion about americans' love for abbreviations or their fear of foreign words? or is it old americans' dislike for anything japanese, ever since pearl harbour?

I think we should start using 'bure' for blur due to camera shake too.
 
I have voted for who cares but When I first learned the word Bokeh I liked it as how was it termed for this lens effect . I think it was a good inventive word in Photography.

I like the word bokeh, and what it came to mean to me. Let me explain why, and I am surprised that this has not come up yet:

I just had bought a Takumar 2/58 in Osaka and was very happy to have found this rare lens. My Japanese friend was amused, so I showed her the first pics had taken with it and pointed out the beautiful bokeh it produced. She didn’t quite understand and I explained that it was a Japanese word denoting the out of focus rendering.

She laughed and told me: Boke is the ‘silly’ guy of a pair in 'Manzai', a traditional form of Japanese stand up comedy. His counterpart Tsukkomi is the 'sharp' guy, they perform a fast double talk, and Boke is deeper ;)

Admittedly I never felt happy when my friend called me a Boke and prefer to be her sofa. When describing the out of focus area in a photo 'bokeh' includes the communication with sharpness and therefore is perfect.

Focus? Out of focus? Who bothers focussing these days? Just point in the general direction of something or other and click the shutter.
 
Who is Ruben Blaedel and why should we care? The guy invented a new word for Bokeh -- hahahaha! Invented, that's rich. Picking an acronym that brings to mind another word for couch is silly. Here's a better acronym GBWSACS -- good bokeh wont save a crappy shot :)
 
I reject history revisionist attempts to credit attach a false name to a principle not established by the pretender.

Personally, I like OOFA for Out Of Focus Areas. Then you could write LOOFA for Light Out Of Focus Areas and DOOFA for Dark Out of Focus Areas. ;)

Bokeh ... is really just the ordinary boke we had in the 60's, but with a really neat beard and skinny trousers ... I wonder what ever happened to the other two, bure and are, the drink'n drugs probably got 'em I expect

There was no consensus, just one man with a highly visible soapbox spreading a personal opinion that was just what people wanting to sell that lens wanted to hear. He later denounced his own opinion on the lens as well. :D

But I am serious about making aware of the role of Boke in Manzai and it's significance for the use of the word 'bokeh' in photography

just pronounce it correctly, please

now there are loads of words in the english language that come straight from other languages (especially jargon like "bokeh"). why start changing them now? (and why to "sofa"--a word that already has a meaning...we have enough of those already).

right, but hardly anybody does. Just googled for 'bokeh pronunciation' and the most often stated explanation says:
'bo' as in 'bow' or 'arrow' and 'ke' as in 'kettle'
which imo got the 'bo' part wrong. It should not be a diphthong sound as in 'bow', but a short 'o'. The diphthong sound makes it sound like an American word very unlike the Japanese original. So does a sound sample given on youtube which additionally makes the 'ke' somewhat into 'kay'.

my take would be 'bo' as in Bolivia and 'ke' as in Kentucky.
