Bye Bye Barnack: Oskar Portrait Series O Replica Solution

Many owners of the beautifully done Leica Series 0 Prototype 2 replicas have lamented the out of place Oscar Barnack Replica on the back of the camera.

The solution can be found on the back of the earlier Leica Series 0 Prototype 1 Replica!

Order the replacement body covering for the Prototype I replica from Leica and have your repair person install it on your Prototype 2 replica!

its not an Elmar, not officially
they call it a Leica Anastigmat
but is a modern multi coated lens
and its fixed mount,
until you send the camera into surgery.

Does leaving him on there reduce, maintain or eventually enhance the value of this repro anyway? Oh, and what is underneath his plaque? Is it possible to warm it up and gently peal it off as we do with certain unwanted vehicle stick-ons, and will we reveal a big hole in the covering behind it, if we are successful?

Possibly, but from the photos I have seen of some of the original "Nullserie", or Model 0 cameras, which this is a replica of, they, unlike the Leica 1 cameras didn't have a hole for colimation purposes.

I was not aware of that.

My 1932 Leica II has the plugged hole in the back... I assumed all the early black Barnacks were that way.

I've cleaned the inside of the Elmar of my Leica I. Makes a huge difference.

I would like to clean the back of the front element of my Leica II's 11 o'clock Nickel Elmar but I can't find any detailed instructions on how to remove it. There is a featureless brass ring which seems to hold it in place. Without the perfect tool for attempting to rotate that I am sure I am better not touching it.

Look for a rubber stopper with the same diameter if the brass retaining ring on the front has no holes or notches in it.

If this doesn't work have the lens cleaned by a competent repairman.

This is probably a silly question, but is the portrait medallion simply glued-over the body covering, or does the body-covering have a relieved inset so that the medallion sits flush with the surrounding surface ?

( Wondering if it's as simple is using a suitable solvent, and just popping Oskar off the back of the camera, and repatriating him somewhere else? )
