ED765C02-F4D3-419E-BD15-56260A0B8B0C.jpeg Sheila, my 1958 Land Rover Series II. Sold her about 8 years ago. Drove that thing into deep winter woods (pre cell phone), through ice clogged deep pools, to work in 8 degree (f) weather......fixed a dashboard meltdown with onboard stuff in a driving rainstorm. My last act, as I said goodbye. Was “Thank You Sheila for never hurting me”. (You Never want to be in a road speed accident in one of those ). ••••• Black Glass 1/6 Plate Ambrotype Taken on location next to a deserted old river dock...

Curse Datsun for Not Using Better Rustproofing!!!

Might as well curse them all in that era. Datsun, Toyota, Alfa Romeo, FIAT, BMW, Mercedes, MG, Triumph, Chevrolet, Ford ... you name 'em, they all rotted to junk fast if you didn't stay on top of the poor metal, salt on the roads, etc. Decent post-production rust proofing didn't happen until the mid 1970s, and good metals with decent corrosion resistant treatments during manufacture didn't happen until the 1980s. :(

The only "nice old car" I'm making photos of lately is my own '67 Lancia ... Now in the upholstery shop for its interior restoration. It's been in the shop for two working days:

Day One had the seats out and dismantled for rebuilding :: https://flic.kr/p/2mYhax6
Day Two had the dashboard dismantled for repair :: https://flic.kr/p/2mYhauR

It's going to be very sweet when done... :D :D

Well, Godfrey, after 55 years the dear needs some help. I'm glad this lovely car fell into your hands and that you are breathing new life into it.

It will, indeed, be a sweet car when done.

I caught this beauty in the owner's driveway while on my walk the day before yesterday: a 1964 Studebaker Avanti!

iPhone 11 Pro, Snapseed

What a beautiful car! Probably the most beautiful American car of my childhood... to me, anyway.
And yes: it is missing one of the windshield wiper arms... The owner told me it was being rechromed. ;)

Raymond Loewy had an office in Greenwich, CT, when I was a teenager. He parked his Avanti in front of the office, on the street. It was not the one you could buy but a prototype/proof-of-concept quite different but generally similar, white IIRC. Said he wished he had designed the egg as it was a masterpiece of industrial design. Avantis were and still are gorgeous cars. Like the DS19/21 they never seem to age.

I grew up in New Rochelle, NY ... 15 minutes from Greenwich, CT ... About what years are you talking about?

I saw the Avanti today again: It turned onto my street going opposite to my direction when I was a couple of blocks from home on my bicycle. Such a beautiful piece of machinery! I almost chased after it... :)

Yes, it will! I attribute the damage to the dashboard and seats to the 10-15 years it spent sitting out in the sun behind its then-owner's motorcycle shop where the guy I bought it from found it. That sun blasting kept the body dry and rust free, but was not kind to the perishable bits of the interior.

The car was so nearly consigned to the scrap and parts bin way back when...! It's good to bring it back to life and looks. :)

The time I am talking about would be the mid-50's. Greenwich was a very different town then. And you could get a really good eggplant parmigiana grinder on Fridays.
