the hat is called Dou-li 斗笠 ( China, Taiwan) or Kasa 笠 (Japan, same Kanji 笠), for sun and rain shade, and made with bamboo and bamboo leaves,
it's called Rice hat, Farmers hat or Chinese bamboo hat, it's super light weight, lighter than the baseball cap i'm wearing

pS,
i was visiting Tokyo few years back, went to Asakusa 浅草, at Asakusa Temple, a monk wearing a Kasa is around, the writing on his Kasa reads;
'本來 無 東西, 何處 有南北' (There is no East or west in the Begining, where can i find North and South')
