hi, wow it's been long since i was last here, i don't even recognize it anymore. 🙂 anywho, i have a question for those that have some experience of servicing their lenses..

i have a generally very nice condition summicron 50 v4 and i noticed recently that it has a tiny bit of play in the lens barrel. i don't know if it was like that when i purchased it and i only noticed when i pulled one of those push-on lens caps or if i actually caused it by using that cap (it was a non-original slightly too tight version).

anyway, it doesn't seem that it's about to come apart, but it's really annoying and ideally i'd like to tighten it back up myself, if possible. it's hard to describe, but i've tried to illustrate using the attached image. if i grab the two parts as illustrated in red and blue, and push/pull there is a hair of play between them. it doesn't matter where i grab onto the blue section, i can do it on the outer end of the ens barrel or on the focus ring, that whole section moves together as a single unit compared to the red part (not sure about the terminology, i think of it more as the mount itself).

i have a tiny sliver of hope that this can be fixed by taking of the flange (i think that is the word?) and then tighetning something up behind there. 🙂 i was thinking of swapping out the flange for a 6-bit coded one anyway.

also, i've had another lens just like this one earlier, and it didn't have this "issue" so my initial opinion is based on that it "shouldn't" be like this, i've never really owned a leica lens with a play in it like this.

any ideas are welcome!

My best advice is to sell the lens. The play has no effect on anything but if it annoys you, then sell it. I had a nice Leica lens (don't remember which one) and even after a CLA by DAG still had the play. Used it for many years before moving on.

yeah you have a point, i bought it fairly recently, but long ago enought to not come back and complain now. the problem with leica is that whenver something isn't 100% perfect it's like people only want to pay 25% of the value. 😉

are you saying that you had the same type of play in your lens, in the same place? i guess i'll just use it as is then and hope it doesn't get worse. or even pass it on for official 6-bit coding at leica germany and see if they can sort it out at the same time.
