Cats

Here are some of mine. With thousands of pretty pictures to choose from, think of the fun I'm having, going through multiple folders and agonizing, agonizing...

All from my iPhone, image quality is up-down. For obvious reasons, phones are easier than a welterweight Nikon or even a smaller-lighter Fuji Pro for cats.

Life with seven cats in one household can be challenging. I didn't set out to collect this small zoo. Initially I had only two, but then I got involved in a local animal rescue shelter in Surabaya (Indonesia), and the collection grew and grew like, well, weeds in a garden.

I opt for a casual style to my cat photography. They are all indoor felines, so it's usually in suitcases or en reposo mostly eterno on a bed rather than formal portraits when they are awake and I can get them to pose...

1 What inevitably happens when I pack for a visa trip to Malaysia. Ozi (front) and Yao (back). Ms Ginger was a street find, note the poodle tail, has one of the finest fur coats I've seen on so-called kuc(h)ing kampung...

2 Two good mates, (the late) Olie and (the still around) Ozi. The big boy was living in the attic of my house, and came down one day for food. Sat on the doorstep for two weeks, then moved in. Passed away last year during a cat 'flu epidemic, aged 13-14. Sadly missed. Ozi is one of the suitcase cats in 1. He was born in the attic of this house in Surabaya, found, taken indoors for safety and predictably kept. (My neighbors have Mami, his mother.)

3 The aforeimaged now grown up Ozi on the floor. A typical hanging-out place, on cool tiles. As a kitten he was known as Baby Spare Parts as he looks like he was put together from leftover cat bits. Clever, friendly, a little feral. Loves most other cats. Highly photogenic. Note the soccer bat tail, common with cats in Asia. Age about six. Healthy as anything. A delight.

4 This image is quite a mess, but I like it. Ozi (with typical crossed front paws) and the late Olie (front), Yao on my backpack. The cat bed sheet cost $2 at a local pasar (market).

5 Scooter pondering cat thoughts (do cats think? let's not go there). The #2 house feline, aka my Japanese cat. Dumped in the garden as a small kitten in 2014, age now about 10, in slowly declining health but still active. Eats sparingly. Friendly, loving, a little neurotic, prone to biting when overstimulated. Needed (and had) a good brushing after this photo session.

6 Cats live on my bed or in suitcases in this house, but it's usually 30C+ and brilliantly hotly sunny outside and I have AC and fans indoors, so. Loose fur everywhere. This is Ojai with his (usual) Who, Me? look. Also a street cat, rescued as a small kitten barely old enough to eat solid food. At times the devil's own cat, clever, scheming, sly, madly demanding. My vet thinks he is part Bombay. I think just a spoiled, socially needy cat. (back parts of Olie at left).

That's it for this post. Four other cats to show off some other time. Three of the seven are up for adoption and, I hope, will eventually go to good homes - if I can bring myself to part with them. The cat food bill will then go down from crazy to affordable...

Technicals - all Iphone, taken with available light, exposure data not recorded.

Blackie, a stray cat that I met during my evening stroll. Now we are friends, and I bring food to him regularly. A tough but friendly guy.

Wonderful pictures and post, DownUnder. Cats think I’m sure. They dream. I played with mine last night, jumps, pirouettes, chasing a small soft toy at the and of a line on a stick. So for the first time in days he’s still sleeping on the chair by the bed, visited me purring in the middle of the night, an hour ago sitting, thinking (not plotting), content.

I guess we shouldn’t degenerate to cat cartoons here, but that is a fantastic genre. Man, standing before his bookshelves, pulls pipe from mouth, looks down at his ready to listen cat: “I know you cats were thought to be something special in ancient Egypt, but that cuts no ice with me.”

This thread has taken on a new life. Maybe even nine lives (okay, groan!!).

Six pages already. How long before we make it to 100?? We can only try. After which, well, a new cat thread, why not?? Puss 2..

A little encouragement from youse all, and I may just post all the ten thousand plus...

2025 already. We need more pleasant and positive threads like this one, to balance off the craziness of the world we now inhabit (for the time being).

I want to assist in keeping this thread going. Will be posting more in the very near future. I have about 10,000 to pick and choose from, so the process will be a bit... well, difficult. And enjoyable.
