The Joyceans among us will hopefully recognize the symbolism. For those of us who have never read the greatest book ever written 😎 the knife signifies one of the book's two heroes, in this case Stephen Dedalus, nicknamed 'Kinch" in the first chapter, meaning knife blade, for his cutting wit. The snuffed-out candle signifies Stephen's fall from grace in not praying for his dying mother. And the salt (empty) cellar signifying the body's purification after death.
