Photography gear that is giving you gas at this very moment

I've never had an FE, but have had an FM for thirty years now. It's a nice camera, but the shutter sound, compared to the sound of a Nikon F shutter, is horrid. Every time I use it I'm reminded of how much I hate the sound of that shutter. It sounds plastic, and rattly and junky. The camera works fine, and the pictures are just as good as ones taken with the F, but the experience is nowhere near the same.

Just my 2¢ worth.

Best,
-Tim

Interesting. I'm not sure if the FE has the same shutter as the FM (I know the FE's shutter is electronically controlled, but I don't know if the physical shutter is the same). At any rate my FEs sound fine to me. But then again I also kind of like the "kachunk" sound of the K1000 shutter so what do I know.

Yeah that Canon F-1 you had is a beauty. I did happen to get the Winder A for my AE-1 for $20 and it’s a nice addition.

I feel a bit conflicted about the Ikoflex as I had a rather good Ikoflex II (lever focus) that I recently sold to a friend of mine as well as a Rolleiflex Old Standard. I think it’s a case of not wanting unnecessary cameras sitting around unused and then later on lamenting my having sold them.
Like nature, GAS abhors a vacuum!

Hey Vince,

As I've mentioned in previous posts, I had this beautiful Canon F-1n back in the day:

I really loved that set up, but unfortunately it is now long gone. I still have the glass though.

Taking this Canon AE-1Program I was gifted, and mating it with a Canon Motor Drive MA, and using that original glass, it's not "as good" but it's pretty darn close. And the images it makes are identical.

Now I can't drive nails with the AE-1Program like I could with the Canon F-1n, but I've got a hammer for that now. 😛

I think your Canon AE-1 will do you fine, unless you're building a house.

Best,
-Tim

What about a Nice Canon EF to go with that lens. Not quite an F1n, but, to me, they handled beautifully.

B2 (;-?

The Canon EF is a nice camera Bill, but I'm in no need of more Canon FD bodies. I may be getting the pristine Canon FtBn I gifted to one of my nieces, back soon. One of the last Canon bodies Ken Oikawa serviced before he retired. (He was the best, IMHO).

Best,
-Tim

I don't get GAS very often, but my most recent little journey was this:

Nikon F Three Lens Kit - Santa Clara 2026
Nikon F with 105/2.5, 55/3.5, 28/2

Photo taken with:
Hasselblad 500CM + CFVII 50c + Makro-Planar 120mm f/4 T*
ISO 200 @ f/16 @ 1 second

I'd had the Nikon F, 28mm f/2, and 55mm f/3.5 macro for some time. Decided to take it out and realized I didn't have the short telephoto I wanted to shoot it with, so I acquired the 105/2.5 and hood. And then I happened upon a very clean 50/1.2, which is on the way here. And I ordered an Urth Leica R lens to Nikon F mount adapter as well, so I'll have access to my Elmarit-R 135/2.8, Elmar-R 180/4, 2x Extender R, and Focusing Bellows-R + Macro-Elmar-R 100/4 with the F body as well.

My emotional tie to the Nikon F is that a Nikon F Photomic FTn + Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 was the first SLR camera I purchased for myself ... a year's savings when I was in second year of High School.

I think I'm done for a while. 😀 .... I'm still debating on the Hasselblad XCD 28P f/4 for the 907x kit. But I wouldn't call that GAS. LOL! 😎

A humble Minox 35 MB or GT-E or both. The MB because it was the camera I owned more than thirty years ago and which was always with me. I didn't like the flare-prone lens and sold it after getting a Rollei 35 SE but in retrospect it was a very good camera because it was there and ready to snap when I needed it. The Rollei was a tad to heavy and boxy to always have it with me, although, the Sonnar clearly was a better lens. The GT-E was the Minox I relly wanted but couldn't afford at the time.

Adding to my GAS symptomatology, the Ricoh GR IV Monochrome Digital Camera for pre-order. Would I empty my pockets for a pocketable monochrome Ricoh? Costs about the same per gram as a Q3 monochrome, but the Ricoh goes everywhere.

Price per gram, I wonder what my old Leice SL 2 MOT would land?

I’m armwrestling with myself over my next target (all digital) OM-3, Z5 II, and the Leica CL and then a bit of glass to go with it.

Ah man, I actually have a list. Some I have in mind for specific projects (including travel), others are just for fun.

- 6x7 rangefinder (GF670 or Makina 670)
- a 4x5 field camera
- 135mm DC and 180mm f/2.8 for Nikon
- various lighting equipment for portraiture
- a moderate wide and a normal lens for Contax SLR
- Contax RX
- Blazar Remus 45mm animorphic
- Helios 44-2
- 50mm f/4.5 ULD for Mamiya RZ67
- 35mm C-Biogon for Leica M

I go through waves of wanting a basic set of Leica R lenses, roughly from the early 80s, including the Elmarit 24, Elmarit 28, Summicron 35, Summicron 50, and Macro 100.

I'd also like a clean set of Contax Zeiss primes and/or Zeiss Classic primes in EF mount, including 25/2, 35/2, 50/1.4 and 85/1.4
Every time I get a hankering to try R glass, after a day or so of pondering (wishing?) I get back to reality because of all the c/y glass I already have. The only way I'll try R is if something pops up for a crazy low price... 😉

Hmm, let’s see …

BP Leica MP (pre 2010)
Button rewind Leica M2
Canon F1 (n and New) + a range of lenses to suit
Hasselblad 500cm + a range of CF lenses to suit
Leica M-P 240
Leica M246
Leica Q3/43
Ricoh GR IV

etc., etc., etc …
What’s special about pre-2010 MP?

...

I had acquired a fair complete set of R lenses shortly after Leica discontinued the R system line because no one wanted them at that point: 19, 24, 28, 35, 50, 60 macro, 90, 100 macro with bellows, 135, 180 and 2x telextender. I still have the 50, the two macros, the 135, 180, and 2x extender ... and use them.

The rest were sold when I sold out of the R system bodies ... I have M mount lenses in the similar focal lengths to the shorter R lenses now: they're more compact and RF coupled too. I kept the longer focal lengths and the macros, use them with adapters on the M and also on the Hasselblad X body. Most of what I sold was worth more by the time I sold it than it was when I bought it, so it was a plus. Same thing happened when I got into Pentax DSLR stuff an age ago ... at the time I was buying, the older lenses were mostly worthless, and most returned 3-4x what I paid for them when it was time to let them go. Mostly luck and accidentally good timing, I fear, since I never planned any of that. I fear many of these great older things are now become more highly prized and cost real money...
