Photography gear that is giving you gas at this very moment

I recently gave my wife the OK to trade her sewing machine in on a new one. She worked the deal herself as she's the one that really wanted a new machine. Her reasoning made sense to me (her third extended warranty is up in May) so I said OK, it sounds good to me. Her old machine probably has over 4 million stitches on it. They clear the count every time she takes it in to be serviced which is every year or more if needed. I don't know how many times it's been in for that, but it's way more than 4 I'm sure. I have a hard time say no to her when it comes to her sewing machines anyways seeing as I got her into the computer driven ones way back when. I could not say NO when I saw they'd brought CNC technology in to run the embroidery units. Being an ex-machinist it was just too cool not to have one in my house.
She asked me today what lens I had my eye on lately. I told her I'd been thinking of trading one of my cameras in on a new camera (Sony A7V). Trouble is I'm oddly attached to my old cameras more than I thought for some reason. I may just have to send one 'up the river' and get the new one though. I'm finding 24 megapixels is a little limiting at times when it comes to cropping.

I've found myself looking longingly at listings for chrome Kowa Sixes. It's probably just a passing fancy, but if it's still on my mind in coming months, maybe I'll take another look.

Nikkor Z 26/2.8 pancake lens as my first Zfc prime lens? Tempting.

Apple MacBook Neo: Am wondering if this little thing might actually suffice for most of what I do.

What is GET? 🤔
GET is to get something or to buy it. My not-so-clever effort to use a word to play off of GAS, which does mean acquiring things. Oh well….
Maybe “Gear Envy Terminated” works better for not buying something you wanted or had GAS for. I give up!

Edit: Godfreys GET works better

Got one last week, it’s quite nice and all I need, finally ditching a MacBook Pro from 2017.

I've been using a 1T iPad Pro 11" since 2018 instead of a laptop. It's time to update, so I wondered about the Neo when I saw the announcement. Hmm ... Largest storage configuration is 512G, far as I understand it. That's not enough for me.

I'll likely get another iPad Pro 11", maybe 2T vs 1T storage. It's way more expensive than a Neo, but I think it suits my uses better.

My bad - i thought you were referring to a previous comment that I missed.

Any voigtlander lens lately has given me bad GAS. to me they have been more interesting than leica. I can name 3 voigtlander lenses I would love to own right now. 50mm f1 vm, 28mm apo lanthar, and the 35mm f3.5 color skopar. the 50mm is a good alternative to a noctilux and the 28mm apo lanthar seems like a good compromise from a summicron 28. The 35mm seems like a perfect small compact lens. best part is they are all priced so they are obtainable for the average person. I also would even love the 40mm f2 nikon F mount lens. Dont get me wrong i would love to own a 35mm fle summilux but not my pockets are not that deep.

A Nikon F Photomic FTn with 50mm f/1.4 was my first "serious" camera. I had another one forty years later that I gave to my friend who always went gaga over mine, and then another friend gave me an early Nikon F plain-prism (with selenium meter attachment!). So that's what I have now ... the F plus 28mm f/2, 55mm f/3.5 with M-tube, 105mm f/2.5, 180mm f/2.8, 300mm f/4.5, and Sigma 600mm f/8 mirror tele. It's a great kit ... I should use it more! One nice thing is that I can use the lenses, with adapter on both my Leica M10-R and M10-M bodies, and with the Hasselblad 907x/CFVII 50c.

I have, or have had enough cameras and lenses to enjoy, but there is just something solidly elegant about the vintage Nikon F photomic camera that peaks my interest. Many come with the Nikon 50mm f1.4 lens, too.
Plain prism Nikon F is how I learned Sunny 16. Early F mont lenses are nice on B&W film too. So many iconic images were taken with them.

The f2 with a de1 finder is the camera I learned photography on! they are such tough cameras. Dropped mine off a cliff by accident once. fell probably 80 feet and still worked after. still have that camera. it also survived a kayak trip where the coast guard had to be called because a freak storm! but thats another story. I have a f apolo too!

Strangely, after spending thousands and thousands of dollars on photo equipment over the years, I suddenly seem to be largely cured of GAS (photo GAS that is). Bought a Nikon Z9, Sony A1, about 8 Sony GM lenses and two Nikon Z S series lenses about two years ago. I feel quite satisfied seeing that the prices I paid for each of the lenses new were often $300 to $800 less per lens than what the lenses are going for now. But I also find myself no longer feeling GAS, even though I am scheduled to travel to Korea and Japan in the future and will have the opportunity to peruse a number of the famous Tokyo camera markets, with my wife actually encouraging me to purchase something. I still may do so, but don't feel any particular desire to do so. Maybe owning so many excellent and top level film and digital cameras and lenses, I am finally satisfied. Now, if I could say the same thing about some high end fly fishing gear, bikes and guitars . . . . Expensive hobbies, but still much cheaper than drugs, gambling, women on the side . . . . Have to consider myself lucky!

Like almost all of us here, I've vowed to never, ever again buy another camera or for that matter another piece of photo gear.

Until the next find comes along, that is.

Giving up buying photo stuff is a lot like Mark Twain said about smoking. -"It's easy to do, I've done it forty times!"

As for any photo gear given free to me, well. Well!!

Looking a photo gear reminds me of an old saying (here I go again) I heard in the Australian Public service. "If it's not nailed down, it's mine for the taking. And if it can be pried up with a crowbar, then it's not nailed down."

This surely applies to photo gear. In my case, a crowbar will never be needed.

Going through a bit of GAS right now:

- Panasonic G9 II now on mega sale in Australia, up to 40% off. The phase detect autofocus would help a lot with my outdoor sports work, and I'm dealing with the AF limitations/quirks of the G9 after buying the Pana Leica 100-400 lately.

- Mandler 35mm f2. This lens has got my attention and the photos aren't helping. It's very small and light, but fast, too. The rendering looks like the right blend of modern sharpness and vintage bokeh.

- Thypoch 28mm f1.4, because I shoot a lot in low light without flash and a fast 28 would be awesome

- Leica Q 116, because it's another option to get a fast 28 but with a compact camera body attached

- Leica M10 R, I've just processed some DNG's from DPReview and the colours and look are much more to my liking than the Q2

- Panasonic S1 II, even though I only just bought an original S1 a year ago. The S1 II has phase detection, even better IBIS, the same batteries as my S5, and uh yeah GASSSSS

Of all these, the G9 II would make the most sense in terms of work and cost saving. Can I get decent images with the original G9? Of course, but I would get more in-focus keepers with the G9 II, hypothetically. Tracking AF is apparently way better than the G9.

This kit is enough to make most enthusiasts and pros be completely satisfied. This is top notch gear.
