New version of the I'm Back roll film sensor on the way. This time it is APS-C and completely internal except for a small wireless trigger.

The guys behind this have been hawking their first version in a Facebook group I'm in lately. Frankly, I think the results look bloody terrible, and I don't see the point at all. It's a clunky contraption that reduces the FoV to the point where you can't really use the built-in viewfinder and it turns every great camera into something even more awkward than an original Visoflex. I'd rather just use the cameras as intended and adapt the lenses to a mirrorless camera if I really wanted to use them on digital.
 
I continue to have zero interest in this. What’s the point? It’s lenses that make the difference and most of those are easy to adapt to digital.

I love using old cameras, but I just put film in them…
 
Clunky or not, it depends on how they execute their job. The idea is not new and not bad. I for one would love to be able to use all of my cameras in a digital type of way. It is almost all about the lenses. Handling a film camera is totally different than a digital camera (not only the output, it is a more tactile feeling).

Bad quality? Honestly, that’s not the point.
We’re using older cameras in a digital workflow, like the Nikon F3 with 50mm f/1.2 and 20mm f/2.8, and these are the results:

If you’re curious, try it yourself. Shoot with a Nikon F3 on film, scan the negatives, and then let’s talk.

This isn’t about saying one thing is better than another. There’s no competition here. The idea is simply to bring old cameras back to life in a digital context, instead of leaving them unused.

...or you could just shoot film and use them as intended. It's not rocket science.

I have yet to see one photo from the "I'm Back" contraption that looks worth it. There's a guy on Facebook using one in a Bessa R2 and the results look like something from a digital camera from 2002. And, again, considering the crop factor, I'd rather just mount the same lenses on the X-Pro 2 I've got on the shelf or my partner's Olympus OM-D something-or-other if I wanted to get quick APS-C or M43 photos from my 35mm lenses. At least I'd be able to frame accurately.
