There are some really great matches coming up, all games from the quarter finals on will be like championship matches.

Surviving teams of the world beware, the Brazilians have launched their warning.
Don't reduce the brazilian team to Ronalinho!

Watched Argentina v Mexico this evening. What a game of football! I doubt there will be a better game in the tournament. Mostly free flowing except for all the Argentine free kicks, won every time by diving that would not look out of place in an Olympic pool. Mexico thoroughly deserved to win, but as usual Argentina hacked and cheated their way to a win, taking full advantage of some decidedly poor refereeing.

Nah. Mexico played great, but Argentina deserved to win. The refs screwed Argentina out of a goal near the end of the second half that would have ended the game in regulation. It was an offside call that was pure baloney.
Mexico played aggresively, especially in the first half when they scored first and threw Argentina off their game. The Mexican goal was excellent, but more were needed to beat a team like Argentina. They didn't come.
Argentina's second goal in the first overtime period was perhaps the most spectacular goal in the World Cup to date.
Overall, it was a fine, hard-fought game and Mexicans can be proud of their team's effort. But the better team won the match.

That was one of the most impressive feats I have ever seen in sports. Pure beauty. IMHO
And I was rooting for Mexico!
I just saw the winning goal, replay on ESPN at 3am. (why not prime time instead of the junk they show normally, an IRL race last night) What an amazing goal.

The winning goal was exceptional indeed, but my deepest respect to Mexico, though i wanted Argnetina to win, but they really played very well, and the game was balanced, thatw as a football game, no one dominated and anyone could have one...
Argentina have some exceptional talents as usual...

The referees should give out diving penalties like they do in hockey. That might help put a stop to this cancer in soccer. Give a yellow card to the fakers!

My regards and admiration for the Mexican team. Great team!

I remember at least two or three yellow cards being given during this cup for diving. Of course, that's not enough, but it does show that the will is there... sometimes.
Refereeing has been exceptionally poor overall during the cup so far. One player, three yellow cards - COME ON! How can that happen? Luckily Croatia didn't qualify, what would have happened if they did?!

What second goal? It was Argentina's only goal. The first goal was, admittedly, a very stupid autogoal from a defense, certainly not Crespo's. If it hadn't been for that, there would have been no overtime.Oldprof said:Argentina's second goal
That said, it certainly was a beautiful one, that overtime goal. The Mexican coach (who was the Argentinian Team's coach of yore, btw) made some dumb changes and the team also had a few limping players towards the end of the second half, and it showed in their very frustrating lack of drive in overtime. That should not be an excuse ever, and they better find a coach that can train them for better endurance.
Germany is going to run Argentina over, but may be another exciting match.

The question is, should Beckham be on the field at all? If he converts one opportunity like that, my answer would be a reluctant yes. But once again the "team" carried him and England were completely unconvincing. I can't wait for Ericsson to go, he is completely mad.

I thought Wayne Rooney was brilliant in the second half. That guy's got blazing speed and amazing touch. Not bad for a guy with a broken toe.

Unlike some autogoals, it wasn't "stupid." The Argentine corner kick was so well placed and came in at such velocity that the Mexican defender had no good options for knocking the ball away from the goal.

I was rooting hard for Ecuador, but England prevailed and deserved the win. Ecuador simply did not generate enough offensive thrusts into the English side of the field. Its passing was not as accurate as England's, resulting in quite a few lost balls and blunted opportunities. And the score could have been worse ... England blew several excellent scoring chances.
But in only its second World Cup, Ecuador advanced to the second round with victories over Poland and Costa Rica. It achieved more than any other Ecuadorian team in history and Ecuadorians are rightfully proud of their team. I have been watching Univision which has been covering Ecuadorian fan reaction in Quito and the Bronx, New York. Their enthusiasm remains strong despite this defeat.

More accurately he has a broken foot. It was the metatarsal that he broke.
