I've got an older, black version of this lens (can't remember the build date right off hand). Will it mount on a Canon 7? I'm thinking of buying one with some of my Christmas money and was curious if this combo would work.

I'm buying one for my Canon P which is supposed to work so I see no reason why it should not on the 7.

There was another thread about using this lens on the Canon P. You might want to do a search for it.

Cool! :D

OK, here's another question: I wear glasses and from the looks of the VF on the 7 it's going to be a scratcher. I'm going to order some eyeglass protectors for my FED 2 from Aki Asahi. Could I adapt these for the 7 or is there a better way to protect my glasses?

Took the plunge a little while ago and ordered a 7 from KEH. Should be in by the end of next week. I needed another camera like a hole in the head, but this Christmas money was burning a hole in my pocket. Should be my last body for awhile, though. Need to start getting some lenses now.

I got my Canon 7 from KEH today. It was better than expected...

I got the "newer" black version (the older ones are chrome and are not known to fit on the P or 7, since the back is bigger than the black version)

Here it is on my P.

Strange....I tried my black j-12 (ser# 7502360) on my P, and I felt some resistance after the lens was about 75% screwed on. It screws all the way down, and seems to work properly, but there is resistance for about a full turn or so. From the rear, it doesn't seem to be contacting the baffles. I wonder what is causing the resistance.....

#9003245 here.

And that's odd because once I get mine leveled and straight then start screwing it on, I get no resistance at all.

Are you getting the same resistance if you attempt to turn it with it off the camera?

I mean I would hope that the build quality of the J-12 is just limited to two sets (chrome and black) And not a hit-or-miss between 6 different series of black lens.

I get no resistance while focusing the lens, on or off the camera. It's only during the last full turn while mounting the lens. I asked Greyhoundman about it a few minutes ago, and he thinks the rangefinder arm is dragging on the lens. I may try to nudge up on the arm just a little.

I have a chrome J-12 and a Canon 7. I too get some resistance when the lens is about 75% screwed on, but I just attributed it to the fact that the edges of the lens appear to be touching the light baffles. They don't appear to be scraping off the paint though, so I didn't worry about it. I should check the rangefinder though.

In any case, it still focuses and takes pictures fine on the Canon 7.

My chrome J12 (1959) doesn't go completely onto my Canon 7, and I haven't wanted to force it. I noticed no damage to the baffles after I tried, but I worry about scraping the edges of the back element of the lens. I once read a recommendation (on a Japanese web page) to push the baffles out of the way with one's finger, reshaping them to accomodate the lens, but I haven't wanted to do that to the camera.

The shape (and the size?) of the rear element seem to have changed after production was moved to Leningrad. (Did this coincide with the shift to black paint?) There were other changes, too. The mounting tabs for the Contax/Kiev mount lenses were reshaped. I wouldn't be surprised if the Leica mount lenses changed in other ways as well.

My J-12 came in yesterday and I tried it out on my Canons. This lens is a 69 vintage black version.

On both my Canon P and 7 the rear element does come into contact with the top baffle. Enough so that I cannot slide a piece of paper between the baffle and element.

It works fine on my screw Leicas though.

Got my 7 yesterday and my '75 model black J-12 mounts perfectly. Lucky me, huh?

This camera is a joy to use!! Little heavy, but not overly so. Wonderfully designed and just the right size for my hands. Slightly louder than my Leica IIf, but still not loud by any means. Probably going to be a keeper.

It looks to be barely touching so I'm going to slightly modify the baffle. It looks like there is room to do the mod.
