A silly question about focusing.

Hello everyone,

I want to ask everyone here that who are using 50mm lens or unders. Which method you are always used?

Use the "depth of view" ? or just watching to the viewfinder(I mean using the yellow shadow)?

I only use the RF, as my lens is almost always at maximum aperture.

I guess I use a blend of the two techniques. If I know that a lot of my shots will be at a distance of say 10 feet I pre-focus or set my distance scale to that distance for my first "quick shot", then if I have time I focus using the rangefinder for an accurate 2nd shot. The first shot is not always perfectly focussed and sometimes there is no second shot oppurtunity.

If I am just walking about I have my lens always set to infinity so that I just have to make a slight focussing adjustment for closer subjects using the rangefinder patch. After the shot I turn the focus back to ininity, this way I am always turning the focus in the same direction and not going back and forth to focus.

I almost always focus in the VF and use the same method as Wayne - the lens is always at infinity and I focus back from there - I only turn the lens in one direction and stop when the focus snaps in.

I'll sometimes scale-focus a 35mm. Will always scale-focus a 28mm, even on SLR. I always use a focussing aid at 50mm, except at infinity. In all cases, the DOF scale is my best friend.

depends on the light... right now my only lens is a canon 50 f/1.2, which takes some time to move from infinity to close focus, so usually I'll use the scale to guess and then fine focus with the rf patch. when I had more lenses with more DoF, I would scale focus in daylight. I practiced this for a long time with a rollei 35- the older tiny version- so I got pretty good at guessing distances, and even have some shots from that little thing wide open (low light) which were pretty good.

For my 50 and 40mm (on my R-D1) I never use scale focusing. Too unreliable.

For my 25 or 15 I often use scale focusing. The DoF will take care of any differences in distance.

depends on the situation and available light, usually scale/zone if I'm on the street as then it's just a matter of composition but if indoors nearly always the patch as I like to shoot pretty wide open

I often use zone focus for a 35 but always use the finder with a 50.
