To iMac or not ?

I have been looking at the new Apple Cinema displays since I need a new monitor. However, they are so expensive1k for a 23" monitor. However, I can get an iMac with an Intel employee discount for a good price. The question are ... I'm a windows/PC guy, how will this new iMac affect my work flow. Also, is the display as good as the stand alone apple 23" monitor?
 
The iMac will change your way of using computers. Just do it.

I use an iMac with iPhoto (included) and Photoshop Elements.

The machine never ever crashes and never gets a virus.

I've used Apples for about 20 years or more and would never use anything else.
 
Whatever you do, wait a week till after Macworld which starts on Tuesday. There are rumors that Apple is going to revamp their whole monitor line. Could mean lower prices across the board or at the very least, you could get the old one cheaper.

I bet they will be offering a 24" Cinema Display since it's probably the same LCD as the one they put in the 24'' iMac.

I'm in the same boat and I'm waiting till after Tuesday to make any decisions.

I would get a Shuttle PC with dual screen displays. The Shuttle is the most awesome speed hound on the planet, great form factor, and once you use dual displays, you will wonder how you ever survived without it. Oh, and it's all plug-and-play.

P.S. you can also get a wireless network card which makes your desktop computer useable anywhere in the house. Just do it!
 
workflow wise it will make a difference, A good difference. I have always used a PC for design work, mostly just cause it comes second nature with a PC.

If i had the money i would buy a Mac Pro. but im going to be stuck buying a dell when i make my next computer purchase. Im tired of building computers from hand me down parts.

there are numerous reasons to "consider" mac. but i belive the most important might already have been stated.... and i second it. i have been on mac (currently g5 imac) for 10 years and no crashes. none, zip, zero, nil. no viruses either. very, very, very stable platforms.
my wifes pc is now in boxes as it has completely crashed and we will probably lose evrything not backed up (again?!?!?).

Once you go mac you never go back. I was a PC guy but once I tried a mac laptop there was just no comparison.

How will it change yoru workflow?

...it will revolutionize it.
 
I have a G5 iMac with a 21" screen. I love it and would never go back to a PC.
You will soon get used to it.
 
I am somewhat scared to say I have worked on Macs for publishing for 20 years now, through practically every variant of Quark Xpress (and now InDesign) and Photoshop. Every five years or so, every finance director in the major companies I've worked for has tried to change the environment to a PC one - yet every time, thankfully for me, cost-benefit analysis has shown that the savings for switching to PCs has been more than offset by the fact that they're slower for various crucial graphics tasks. Even today, the vast majority of repro companies use macs for heavy duty PrePress and retouching work.

The Apple Cinema displays are bloody expensive though - I believe Philips makes he LCD panels for some or all of them, and that similar monitors using the same LCD panel, with various differences, are badged as Dell. However, the iMac package is a grat one for the money, and if I were starting from scratch that's definitely what I would go for.
 
you can partition your hard drive... run virtual pc and then run any pc platform you choose on your mac. virtual pc has come a LOOOONG way over the years and is very stable. so any pc software you just can't live without can come along for the ride.
 
My PCs running XP never crash. The programs do, but the PC never. As for viruses, don't be a dummy and click on things you shouldn't, and keep your anti-virus SW up-to-date. Happens automatically now on all PC AV SW. These guys who love the Mac probably think a Leica is the best camera in the world, too. 😉

I wish my work would see it that way, our "techs" dont understand why we want macs, plus they have no experience when it comes to them, so they fear what they dont understand...

I used both platforms concurrently for a few years, because of work situations. Now I have mac at work as well and haven't had to use a Windows machine for about four years. Every time I get on one to help a friend with a problem or something, I'm amazed at what a frustrating process it is to do ANYTHING on Windows.
Go mac and enjoy quick, smooth, stress-free computing!

see now you guys are making me havd computer gas...

my work pays up too 2000 for a computer i was thinking about using that for a mac pro, but i wouldnt have no screen...


now you guys are making me want to just buy the mac...
 
This needs to be said:

PC's are butt-ugly. Dell monitors look like they belong on the flight deck of a Klingon spaceship. Who designs their stuff, 13-year old boys? Has no one at Dell ever walked through an Apple store? 😕 😕 😕

I know it sounds a bit harsh, so let me try again:

Even if my iMac died, and could do nothing but run a screen saver, I would still keep it out on display. 😉

No, scratch that. Even if it couldn't run a screen saver, I would paste a photo onto the screen and still keep it out on display. 😀 😀
