1st Leica arrives! Diopter question +

.72 MP silver arrived today. My very first Leica. Suffice it to say that I am thrilled. It is smooth and exudes quality.

If I am nearsighted, would I need a negative diopter or a positive one? I wasn't sure, and ordered a +3 and it makes things much worse. And, just a little curious as to why Leica refers to the metering as ambient when it sure seems like good old fashioned reflected weighted 18% to me. Sorry, I have to go say hello to my MP again.

It seems to be close to 8 rolled over, so your normal -ve prescription is best.

Read the manual or misload the film next, I don't jest, the baseplate diagram is only for 40 below.

Hi Noel, can you tell me what you mean here? I've always used the baseplate diagram as a reference.

The leitz manual (paper) - PDFs are avalaible on site posts some where - says when it is 40 below and the film may be brittle use the baseplate diagram, to avoid shattering film.

Otherwise take the film +1/2" further through the forks until the end touches the interior wall other side of take up chamber (, sic there will then be more friction securing the film).

It also says don't wind on until bottom is on and locked.

Some people have trouble with the PET film base film, i.e. thin film.

Lots of people have trouble loading, the cold weather technique should work ok, additional film merely provides more security.

Ahh, I see what you mean. Thanks. I watch the rewind knob for the first two clicks to be safe.

Sorry to hijack the thread. Back to the topic, I've read elsewhere that the diopter should simply match your prescription. Alternatively, there are the MS magnifiers that have built-in adjustable diopters. I've been considering one myself but can't decide on which magnification.

-3 means you have to wear glasses, so probably need to consider the foam rubber doughnut.

The Leitz manual is useful.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up for me. No pun intended...seriously!
I shall purchase the -1.5 giving me an even -2.0. I can't get over this camera!
