There have been a lot of G.A.S. threads lately...so I thought I'd add to the noise level...

For many years I have used the B&H ads or website as a reference for US prices of all too familiar camera gear - even for a recent price pitch for new TV gear. :)

So a couple of weeks ago I found myself in New York for the first time...and had an hour to spend in B&H while my girlfriend was in Macy's with my daughter. I had saved a thousand dollars to spend on camera gear...anything I want...and wound up buying nothing. After fighting the sales shopping crowds of NY, I realised that I didn't need or really want anything film-camera related.

I had been thinking of a used Leica, maybe M4-2...but then it hit me that the G2 is more suitable for my style of shooting - always a personal thing - but I like the way the G2 works and I love the lenses...no criticism intended of anyone using Leica gear...

But it got worse...having looked at all the camera bags in all their different styles, I realised that I didn't even need one of them - a small sony padded bag jammed in my ArcTeryx day bag is more than enough to protect the G2 and still leave room for all the other bits needed when dragging a small child around for the day. And it cost 10 quid from Walmart rather than a proper camera bag for 100+

After an hour and a half I'd spent just 20 dollars on lighting gel for my TV rig.

A few days later - back in Florida after watching the Redskins not quite win against the Giants in DC - I picked up a pair of Bose headphones instead. ;)

I have an office full of Nikon gear as well as the G2 that travels with me for leisure...after some 26 years of camera buying, this was the first time I realised I didn't need anything new. It's a strange feeling. :)
It was also quite invigorating - just concentrated on the shooting after that - lots of rolls to dev now!

Of course I DO need to change the D70 for a D200...but work can pay for that.

Damn - now I have nothing to add to all these gas threads...

David, I think you should be worried. It's just not natural to be out of GAS :)
But I AM worried... :)
...that's the thing...it's just not normal...taking all these photos without thinking "if only I had the superduper whatever lens/camera etc...
Too much sunshine maybe...?

Hey Rob - I'd brought a bunch of rolls with me from the UK. So didn't even need that.
It was worth the visit to B&H for the humour though - "check your bag sir" meaning "put your bag in a locker rather than standing there unzipping every compartment and showing me the contents"
Just as well New York is an easy going, laid back sort of place...
;)

20 years? You'll be about ready to give up on that interspatial 3D blur problem on the new dilithium Leica M27 that weren't obvious in the nul gravity review. And I'll have saved enough to get married...

Come up-state a bit next time; we are a little more relaxed.
Dilithium M27? Nope, I figure I'll just be easing into the EOS system by then.
Either that, or I'll just be getting the upgrade for my implanted eyeball camera.
And we still won't have flying cars yet, I bet.

Someone get this man some beans!!!!

Actually, I slightly am feeling the same thing. I am waiting for a 50 Summilux to arrive, and I have a little more $$ saved up, but I just can't find anything to spend it on, that I really want.

It will pass, put the $$ aside, it will pass.

What you experienced was not uncommon to people with G.A.S. You were in B7H for the first time I take it, Yes?!

You were just simply over whelmed. It will pass and your G.A.S. will return.
