Hi All,
I'm sure that this was talked about a million times, but I wanted to make sure. I came across this auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEWA:IT&viewitem=&item=280070965385&rd=1&rd=1
And it states that Summicron-C, 40mm/2 lens does NOT focus right on Leica M cameras, only on CL. Is this true? How about Minolta version of it?
I thought they worked just fine on ALL M cameras, with correct focus.
Please carify this for me.

Have you checked out Stephen Gandy's site yet?

He seems to think it will work just fine on a Leica.

My Rokkor 40, which is a clone of the Summicron 40, works perfectly on both my M bodies and my Hexar RF.

I've been lurking and reading forums a while now, and I've never read of anyone having any negative issues using any version of the leitz/minolta/whoever summicron/rokkor 40/2 on anything! Both of mine work fine on every M mount I've got.
I think the general belief is, the tolerances of the C series were not specified to be as strict as the M series, so the possible focus error could be out of the expected range of what one may be used to on an M summicron, but in practice, the things work just fine.
Maybe it's all marketing, trying to worry the M owners into thinking they will burst into flame or have cronic redeye if they fail to buy the 'proper' summicrons at much greater cost..

The seller was foolish to have mentioned the issue at all.
First of all, it's misinformation.
Second of all, the lens sold for about $100-$150 below market price for one in that condition, probably because he spooked some of the bidders. Lucky buyer.

40/2 on the RD1 works great. I'm even using the Rokker non CLE version with funky angled cam, yet still perfect focus and no backlash. It's bizarre how long these rumors can persist. Sold my spare CLE version to a fellow RFF'er who loves it, turns out a "speckle" I thought it had was a tiny dead spider!

mwooten said:I have the minolta version, and it has become my favorite lens for my rd1. In fact I like it so much, I'll probably sell my cv 35 p2 and 50 nokton.

I'll chime in, too - I've never had a problem with either of the CL lenses on my old Bessa-T or my current M6.

I want to add that I have the Minolta Rokkor version and I also had the CV 40/1.4 Nockton. I sold the Nockton and kept the Minolta even though it was slower. The image it paints is just awsome.

I didn't - I didn't bid, in part because I was not sure of it's focusing and in part cause I'm not sure that I'd rather have a 50mm cron, latest version (more money, I know).
