Hey everyone,
Today I had a little GAS attack, it made me wonder what others oddest or most extreme GAS attacks have been?
I think mine came today, at least the worst so far. Im going down to FL to shoot the Rolex 24 hour Porsche race, and my tripod has been annoying me, so in sets the GAS. I get on Bogen/Manfrotto's site and check for local dealers, theres only one, I only had about $150 that I could comfortably spare, but I figured Id see what they had, in store they had one set of Manfrotto 3021BN Legs left, and a bunch of different heads, Grip Action, Geared, Ball, etc, I decided I had to have the Legs and the Manfrotto 488RC2 Ball Head, total, about $300. I was short half, I went home, looked in ye olde gear bag to see if I could get rid of anything quickly but for profit. Last month I convinced myself somehow I needed the Olympus SP-350 Digital, actually a super nice little cam, especially for macro, anyway, I used it a handful of times, and I got it for $175 factory reconditioned! MSRP is $349, so I box it up in its box from Olympus with everything it came with, and taped over the part that said "Reconditioned" and took it to the local pawn shop, told em it was brand new, it passed, and amazingly they gave me $150 for it, anyone familiar with those shady places, know that just doesnt happen. So, in conclusion, I got rid of a basically uneeded piece of gear, and got a kick ass $300 Manfrotto setup, plus my Bessa R kit is on the way
I love weeks like that!
Whats your #1 GAS story?!
Thanks
Bryan

You mean aside from the weeping that sets in uncontrollably whenever I see a black paint MP3 for sale?

Ain't that a nice set of legs? I don't have the 488RC2, but do have the 3021BN, with a "standard" 3030 head. I've thought about a squeezer head for a while, but so far, haven't REALLY found the need for it.
Have fun at the race!

Don,
Yeah its definetly a nice setup, I love the ball head, I took it out for a few hours after I got it. I brought my D70 with battery grip with me, and tested it out on some of the grip action heads, theyre nice, until you go vertical! If you shoot vertical ever, which I do tons of, Id advise against it, with a 70-210 on, its a shaky head, bad idea. For smaller cameras, theyre really nice though, I thought I was going to get one, but, looks definetly werent everything!

Every time a black paint MP3 is sold an angel gets its wings. That should make the weeping stop.

I dunno, most of the stuff I grab impulsively are wird lenses that have nothign to do with RF's, but I stopped at a local store to see if the consignment owner had ever made up his mind to sell or not , a Rapid Omega (why was it in the case if not for sale?). It was gone, but there was a Kodak Medallist II and case and flash sync cord.
"Is there a price on that?"
"We'll have to check with the owner.
"Grr ,&^@$#*^@#*, same BS again " (to myself).
A week later, "Well, has the owner made up their mind?"
'Yes, $65."
"Did you say $165?"
"No, $65".
Well, it works, nice condition, could use CLA, speeds seem a little slow where I can tell (like 1 sec, etc). Gotta learn 620-120 rerolling . I've trashed 3 rolls so far trying. I have a 40? year old roll of Ansco PAN 620 in right now because It cooperated.

Hey, Bryan!
Thanks for the feedback regarding vertical use with the 488RC2. I do a fair amount of vertical stuff, and have no trouble with the 3030. A little slower, perhaps, but solid as a rock.

My #1 GAS story...
Would have to be the 100mm for that RF645 in the avatar.
No one NEEDS any lens or camera. I certainly didn't NEED the 100mm. I had negative $3000 in the bank, I had really bad GAS for the 100mm one week last year, so...I bought one from a dealer in the UK that Clarence hooked me up with. I called the dealer, as soon as I heard that he had one available for sale, at 1am PST - almost an hour later, I had talked him out of his resolution to sell the 100mm ONLY with the kit. We talked about how I should pay for it, ran a couple cards that we declined, I found one that worked, and it was done. A week later I woke up to the most wonderful sight an RF645 user could imagine.
Every now and then, I think to myself, "if things should ever get really hairy financially, I could always sell the 100mm," then part of me deep inside laughs hysterically. And the ulcer pinches me.

Haha, I love it! I dont know what it is, theres this part of photography, that all of us feel at times, theres a seriousness to it, then theres the "Little kid with a brand new toy!" or a simple case of the gimmes! Im sure Ill be doing the same thing when im 60! But yours is a prime example! Way more hardcore than mine! Although Im about $1100 in the hole right now and ordered a Bessa R kit, sometimes I think, screw it, moneys money, maybe I should just order a new Leica M6 or M7 kit and figure out how the hell to pay for it later!
Thanks for posting

I have no credit cards, but with the baby coming I'm getting GAS for new kit, as we all know. We'll see how badly GAS hits me when I see the size of my tax return for this next year. If it's as good as I think it may be...both Stephen Gandy and keh.com may get business from me. One last purchase before I can no longer buy anything for myself. Adam will eventually forgive me.

Just remember Stef - it's only money. Not something important.

I want a Leica M. I've wanted one for quite some time. We've already found a crib and I can live without the Calphalon One pan that I wanted and go to a restaurant supply store to get something of close quality much cheaper. I'm selling a few other things that don't matter so much (video game stuff, mostly). I'm excited to go shopping for baby stuff, but I'm also going to be working two jobs and I want something nice for myself for working that hard.
Adam may still get his TV that he wants, and he's still getting the $100 version of Halo 3 in November. I think I should be able to have my Leica since it'll get a hell of a lot more use than Halo 3, plus it can be something to hand down to my kids.
If I think like that, it makes me want it even more. So...Remy...how much would you charge me for that M2 again?

I missed what?
As far as my GAS goes, I have Bought 4 cameras in the past two days. A Zeiss Ikon Ikotna, Argus AA, and an Argus AF and my personal holy grail Leica M7 "50 year M system". As well as some camera body plates from http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/ for my G2, Canon XTI, the Leica, and for one of my camcorders.
I really need to be done spending for the year.

Im the same, I have no credit cards anymore, they were feeding to me like candy when I was 18-20, until I actually strated using them! Haha. Gandy just got some business from me though, couldnt resis my first Bessa R, especially the kit hes doing now! We have one more thing in common, the Leica M, my dream camera, dont even care which one, just want a black body! Ive been striving for one for years, but betwen rent etc, just cant seem to make it happen, Id trade most all of my gear for one at this point! Im 23, I know its young, but Ive been at this for a while, and im overdue for a Leica, at least a body! I need to setup a "Donate a Leica body fund for Bryan!" haha, (dreaming I know!) One day! One day! Youre overdue too, you need a Leica within 9 months!

I sold a couple of motorcycles to be able to get it. I miss the Bikes already, but the camera I will use more.

Those of you looking for a black M camera might also consider the M4-P (see my avatar). I picked this one up in excellent + condition with just a tiny bit of rubbing on the edges of the bottom plate for $850, and it is awesome.
I know its not an M7, but then again, what else is???
