Zeiss 85mm f/2 Delayed

Price of ZM 85 is around $2300, from my understanding delay was due mechanics and not optical design :) just imagine if $2300 lens would start wobbling :D

There are Leica owners out there who already know how this feels. :D

Well, My ZM 50 planar and 35mm biogon wobble, so how much is that in total? :D

You're almost there.. just throw in a zeiss ikon or the 25mm and that should be within the ballpark, +/- $100 :D (talking gray market here)

This is absolutely true, and I am one of them. :( My 90/2 AA is currently with Tony Rose's technician.

Coming out now with a f/2.8 would be absurd, and Cosina/Voigtlander already has a 2.5/75 which isn't bad either.

For that matter, there's also the Rollei/Zeiss Planar 80/2.8. And the CV 75/2.5 is great, but these are not a substitute for 85/90

I appreciate that "major redesign" and hope for a different spec, because I wouldn't have seen a good reason why to buy this "Sonnar" which is as bulgy as the old SLR-Planar 1.4/85 lens - and no bad performer even for today's standards - for a price similar to a nice, comparatively compact and simple constructed lens like the Apo-Summicron, which only disadvantage is price.

The differences in bulk between the Summicron & this new Sonnar are small. In fact, the Summicron is heavier. The M-Hexanon 90/2.8 is significantly smaller, but not the Summicron.

I applaud Zeiss for correcting the correctable BEFORE putting it on the streets. All of the Leitz/Leica 75-90 lenses have been good lenses; Zeiss knows that an absolute top quality lens must be brought to market. With the wide range of excellent photographic equipment available to us, this is the best time ever to be a rangefinder user.

Hi Huck,

Great stuff the converted TLR Planar. How was its weight? How many were sold by Rollei for that price? If they reached 100?

If I had the money I would buy one, just to see how's the price among Rollei fans in 30 years from now on, when no collector remembers why a lens or camer was flopped, just the rarity counts... :)

No, Zeiss need to go for a f/2 lens. At least. It should be either better, smaller, faster or considerably cheaper than the AA-Summicron, or best, all of them. Just be one level isn't enough. And the simple design of the Summicron has its own beauty. Like it looks from the pictures the Zeiss 2/85 was just ugly. No thanks, I keep my 1.4/85 Planar, saves a lot of money..

:) Frank
