I just posted some revalations to me on scanning color neg on photo net digital darkreem forum. Read it CAREFULLY if you scan color neg.
It is titled scanning on manual control, 1/30/2007. It will be a hugh time saver for me.

(First, this is coming from the perspective of the Scan Dual IV and not the 5400, but I understand the software is very similar.)
The one thing I will agree with you on is that it doesn't seem like Vuescan will really add anything the K-M software does not have, particularly in terms of image quality. Vuescan does have its fans, however. I do get the impression that quite a few switch to Vuescan midway upon the learning curve of the standard software, and continue the ascent using Vuescan.
The one thing I might respectfully disagree with you on is to make a practice of scanning on manual instead of auto. I say "it depends" as for me, anyway, the auto settings often times give me a great scan, but sometimes do not, and yes in some cases going into manual and tweaking things works much better.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have clearly marked controls on the scanner software control panels that let you know how to alter the exposure of the scanner's sensor, vs software alterations to the file?
