RD1 questions, about to be owner

Hello there,

Im contemplating buying a RD-1... but the reability of the beast is scaring me.. I've seen RD1's plagued with problems... with RD1s firmware is more or less solved ? Feels strange after having a 1Ds and D2x , turning them back for a M7 and now thinking of getting a 6mp camera.. pixels aint everything, I know, learned that the bad way with the D2x..

How clean are the high iso files of a RD1 ? 800 are nice ?

Any problems with mouting my existing lens ? 35 F2 ASPH and 90 F2 ASPH ? Im contemplating the buying also of a CV25 F4 Skoppar.. any problem with the mount, apart from the VF will be the wrong one ?

I got an offer, well, an intention to buy a Leica 28 F2 ASPH for a quality mate.. seems overkill to a M7, but could be nice to Rd1

Camera to buy is used though, seems ok
 
I've had my R-D1s for 6 months and used it very heavily. It's still fine, never had a single problem with it. There are no guarantees, but if you get a good one my experience suggests there's no reason not to expect it to be reliable. Not everyone gets a good one, though.

High ISO files are excellent.

All the lenses you mention should work OK.

I've had good luck with iso 800, just get the histogram in range, usually takes some +EV with this camera.

The lenses should work fine, the CV 25 is not coupled so the 21 might be better?

Before the IR filter costs become inflated beyond all reality, they are aprox $100 each- if you have 14 lenses that must have filters then you'll spend $1400 on filters, if not, then not. As to the R-D1, you'll need them on this camera too. Even the cheapest RFf members are picking up a few for their Epsons.

I've been using the R-D1 for more than 2 years so far and i've never felt the need to use those filters personally.

Hey, I resemble that remark. Nyuk nyuk nyuk. Actually I only bought one...hoping that see-thru Filter View thingus I bought and never used will work well enough one's all I'll need.

To paraphrase Dire Straits - 'I love my R-D1' 😀

Never used an IR cut filter and haven't ever noticed a problem with the magenta cast.

2 years use with no problems. I regularly use ISO 800 without giving the noise a thought. At 1600 it is quite noisy, but it does look like grain and is quite acceptable.

There are lots of threads on suitable lenses - I've chopped and changed lots of times, but the CV 28/1.9 is great, as are all the CV 35's and the Nokton 50/1.5 - I also use a 21mm Elmarit-M, and a few others. But there are lots of good lenses at reasonable prices around.

If you take the plunge, good luck. If you get a good one, you'll love it! Personally I wouldn't buy one unless I could try it out first. I got mine from Calumet and tried three in the shop, and picked the best of the bunch. Otherwise its really is pot luck, I'm afraid.

Andreas the M8 retails for $4700 USD so if your above statement is to be taken seriously you are suggesting the average M8 shooter purchase $2075 worth of IR cut filters to equal the 20% of the M8’s price with filters according to this claim- absent a cogent argument one can always fall back on the ad homonym abusive.
 
Not quite sure if Leicaphiles are average photogs but anyway people like me may own more than 20 Leica lenses and use 10 of them more or less regularly.
I've paid my last R-D1s 1700$ and i dont need any filter with it.
So do the maths.

I have only had mine since the first of the year. No problems so far. I grabbed a refurb through Epson, so I have a one year warranty if needed.

Better listen to the guy, it's his specialty 😀 BTW it's ad hominem. A homonym is a word that has the same spelling and sound as another word but means something different. Like "file" (as in file cabinet) and "file" (as in fingernail file).
