Light & compact lens suggestion for traveling with Leica M.

I bought this f2.8/28mm Ricoh GR lens for my M6 a few years ago; it's a nice little gem that makes a nice combination with the f2.8/50mm Leica Elmar-M for traveling light and compact. Unfortunately only a few were made and therefore it's a collector’s item. It's a pretty tiny lens, well built and a great performer. I just wanted to show you!

Nice lens Frank and welcome to the forum! Post some pics from the lens if you can! If you plan to venture up to the 90mm lens I strongly recommend the Leitz 90/2.8 "thin" Tele-Elmarit, an excellent little travel lens. 🙂

Frank, I have been wanting one of those for years. It is supposed to be a great optic. Extremely hard to come by. As a matter of fact, that's the only one I have ever seen other than in print. They never show up on e--y, at least not that I have ever noticed. Thanks for the tease!

Buy a Ricoh GR-1. Much, much cheaper than the lens by itself and a lovely camera to use. I've never had a 28mm lens for my M so I just dump the little beauty in the bag.

It's a shame that the new digital version appears to be a bit of a let down by comparison, dare I say that Ricoh have mirrored Leica in this????

I'll chip in another vote for the thin Tele-Elmarit as the ideal 90 for travelling light. My "travel" outfit combines one with a 35mm Summicron.

Another option to consider if speed is not as important to you is the Rokkor 90/4 lens. About the same size as the Tele-Elmarit, a couple of stops slower, and considerably less expensive to acquire.

My thin Tele-E was the reps sample. I got his 65 Elmar black, Viso 3, and the Elmarit all at once. My 28 was $450, 90 2.0 $400, 21 2.8 $650. Still have it all.

I was friends with the largest Leica dealer in the country at the time and was able to pick up a lot of mint old stuff as it came in.

The Canon Serenar 35 and 28 are also very compact, and very beautiful, but not very modern. I like the look of the Serenar on my M3.

J12, only problem is it is too easy to change the aperature by accident. You dont have to clean it, instead trash it and buy another - few to get a good one.
