i have a 4x mamiya loupe right now (great loupe, btw), but i'd like something more powerful to check details and sharpness. what's your assessment of the 8x-15x loupes out there?

have you looked into Peak loupes? Very well-made in my experience (at least the 4x one).

i've only seen the 4x, but that was years ago.

I have a 10x Calumet that I use for checking my groundglass focus (on the 4x5 and 6x9 View cameras).
It's fantastic, bright, at least as sharp and (appears to be) as abberation free as the schneider and mamiya competition. But it doesn't look like they carry it anymore, and I don't know who made it for them.

I just bought two of these for $12.95 each. The 8X loupe portion works great on a 6X6 waistlevel finder, the 30X microscope portion gives a very detailed but narrow and tiny view of a small spot. The monocular is cute, but I haven't really found a use for it yet.
Virtually the same thing sells for $70 at Haverhills and $40 at Sharper image.

If you're in a hurry, here's one from Micro-Tools:

But, if you can wait and there's a flea market near you, there usually is someone selling optical stuff, like loupes, for a few dollars. And you can try them to see how you like them...
Here's an old Bausch & Lomb loupe I use...The power isn't mentioned but it must be around 8 power or so:

I have a Peak 8x. made for 24x36 Neg/slide with an adj. eye piece and clear sides. So you can use ambient light or a light table. Sharp corner to corner..
I also have a 10x "linen tester", got that one at litho shop. these were used to check half tone dot sharpness. and color registration. (small medal folding type)
