Can anyone tell me more about the ECI RGB color space? how does it compare to Adobe RGB? What is it used for?

You'll find extensive color information at the International Color Consortium's (ICC) site.
The spec for the European Color Initiative RGB color space is presented as a 1-page PDF HERE. (Apparently Europeans' eyes are different from Americans, Asians, etc.)

why do you say so, Ken? because it has the word "european"in it?
I think it has more to do with the different standards in printing etcetera colour spaces. IN that, even Japanese have "different eyes" than europeans or americans. Or different printers, maybe; different inks, papers, different light? dunno.
All the mess with standards and units originates from "historical reasons"and regional/national proudness.

ECI and Adobe 1998 are similar colorspaces, and larger in size/gamut than sRGB... that other choice you have in-built with the M8. Whichever you choose, this is used in the in-camera JPEG processing, not the DNG... so it(ECI, etc.) is used for JPEGs straight from the camera.
Lots of info on the 'net, which comes to lots of "so, what's the difference?" This thread on pnet was started by a fella who posted about Joseph Holmes' ICC profiles, but then goes on to include CIE, sRGB, ECI, etc...

The reason you have different color spaces has nothing to do with European eyes being different. CMYK ink sets are different in Japan, the US and the EU. Some of that is accident, some may have to do with environmental regs. There have also been various groups and companies working on QC standards. I have been out of the pre-press printing business for a while but back in the 80's all the most advanced QC systems we used here in the US came from Europe (Germany and Switzerland).

- ECI RGB the other hand, uses gamma 1.8 and 5000 K, contrary to the requirements of the printing industry in Europe is fully compliant.
