Leica dramatic price drop?

I just live here but I believe the word ***** is an old derogatory term for an African-American.

True that you cannot buy a used 75mm Summicron - I looked for over 6 months.

I personallly would never think of selling my film Leicas or even travelling without one in conjunction with the M8. The M8 is just too unreliable at the moment to depend on for a trip of any length. My feeling is that the film Leica values will at least maintain themselves until the M8 is field-ready. Note: This is not a flame or troll post. I own an M8, but I have seen just enough flaky behavior to make me distrust it and just enough great images to make me want to keep it.

Yes, it is offensive. It's not sexual, it's racist.

Ernst

It was a derogatory term, common in the late 60s and 70s, for a black man. Probably from the card suit - "as black as the ace of *****s" is a well known saying (referring to any black or dark object).

As to prices - I certainly noticed that M6 prices dropped after the M8 came out - about 10% to 15%, but not much else. I did notice an increase in the price of pre asph 35 summicrons though.

have to put this in perspective. camera/photography is an expense, not an investment, a career for very very few.

in any case, you buy when you decide to buy, regardless the price. it would be nice to find a cheaper one. if you are in financial straitjacket, it is unlikely you will spend more money on cameras. if you are a die-hard fan, you can certainly find few thousand bucks, which is not too much more than, let's say, one mortgage payment/rent.

If you really want to buy low and sell high, you are in the wrong business. Regardless, I think MP can retain more resale value than M7. Your marginal cost will be only few hundred bucks. Better than what you can say about digital ting.

You are absolutely right - this is NOT about an investment - other than in quality of course;) This was not intended as "when is the best time to buy cheap Leica gear" but rather a thought that came to me last night. What impact will digital have on RF, incl. Leica? I think we are heading towards some very interesting times - we might not like what we will see, but they sure will be intersting!

It never ceases to amaze me how language "evolves". My theory is, when a critical mass doesn't know how to use it, they change it to fit their communication needs. That, of course, is not the only venue of language evolution, but seems to be the main one in this there-are-no-rules-hence-we-change-the-language-to-adapt-to-the-lack-of-rules environment.

"Leica dramatic price drop" - Unverbalized sentence sudden argument ensue ;)

We must agree to recognize this is not looking for a fight.

It is funny that "s p a d e" is banned, as when used to describe a tool used in your yard or a card suit it is not an offensive word. Context is key.

One of these days we may end up talking about silver or ***** lenses.

Back to camera pricing for a moment. I think the lens market will stay strong, but the film body market will drop. I think you'll be able to buy a M6 Classic for $600 by Christmas time.

You can buy one for that price now - only it won't be in the best condition.

The IIIf and IIIg prices held up while they overlapped with M3 and M2 production, the trolls gloated when non screw thread lenses were introduced. the IIIc did not plummet either, they were still cameras and if you did not need the new fangled lever wind or had a leiciavit...

We will have to wait until the early adopters are sated, and the M8 is mainstream and a M2 and IIIg equivalent is introduced, and M lenses which only cover small sensors...

I have seen a noticable uptick in the 75mm Lux and 50mm Noctilux. I kick myself everyday for letting a pair of 75mm Lux go on Ebayfor $1200 a few months ago. Noct's have trended up from $2300 to now $3000+.

M6 bodies with the .85 VF have ticked down about 5% or 10% as best I can tell.

CLA'd M3 bodies can be had for a song.

The turn over is more important than the price, to the manufacturers.

If you buy a Noctilux with a % off cupon, will you sell it easily, there does not seem to be a glut of sealed box lux for sale cheap?

(Like in the Motorhead song: "I see it in your eyes, take one look and die; the only thing you see, you know it's gonna be the Ace of Spаdes", and I know I'm outing myself as a fan of music considered bad by most people)

but...

but...

i couldnt avoid a good laught when I saw this thread : my first time I used a RF, was in a store, took a picture and since i didnt used a lever for ever, the guy in the store turn to me and said "cock-it" when i pressed the shutter button.. i was horrified  looking at him and everyone had a good laugh, which even puzzeled me more.

;) 5 seconds after, a kind girl that was buying a hassie told me > you are not english are you ? well dear, when you do this with the lever, is called "cock" and I laughed ..

i found the "*****" thing utterly revolting though.. I never heard no second meaning for that word.. jesus... oh well, im not a good person to judge that, i though a guy was doing dirty jokes on me when he actually was only telling me to advance the film lever

Have to agree with DougFord, standard M's have dropped slightly but stabilized, but considering the axioms of the digital market M8's will drop far more percentage-wise shortly.....
As for M lenses, very stable if not robust market...just search 'Summicron' on ebay and have a look. Even the bugeyed M's lenses (which I presume can't be used on an M8) are selling for very good dollars.
