I managed a panoramic!

This is one of my shots for the shoot-all-day-on-equinox, but I hope you all don't mind me posting it separately.

Bear in mind this is 6 images stitched together. I used 'photostitch' for the first time.


Leica M2, Summicron 50/2 coll... f/16 or thereabouts.


This is the view from atop one of the banks (hill, not money).. My vantage point overlooked some of the main site. This has a road cutting through the centre.

I think that from where I was sitting, there were stones for about a mile in any direction.

VERY cool, ASH! I've long been interested in places like Avebury and Stonehenge, being educated in Cultural Anthropology and particularly interested in pre-literate cultures. Recently saw a new item about new discoveries around Stonehenge...brings out the Archeologist in me...

The stitching was all automatic. To be fair to the program it's very basic.

I actually prefer doing it manually in 'shop.

Ash - that's great - I've been using another program that is realy excellent that I can fully reccomend - Arsoft panorama maker. I find it much better that the CS2 function. It does an excellent job of matching tonal/color changes between adjacent shots as well as matching the images.
Attached is one I made last fall in Northern India stitched together from 5 shots with the above program.

I'm not using CS2. I'm using Kodak's PhotoStitch that is standalone, and comes with their dslr's 😉

Hey Ash...i want to have a go at a panoramic tomorrow using the old IIIc. Did you use a tripod for this shot? Can you explain your technique?

ash, good job indeed.
However, i see some pretty ugly drying marks on the top (i think that's what they are) and some lint or other embedded foreign stuff 🙂 Also, the tones are a bit weird, especially on the right side of the image there seem to be only a few grays with gaps between them. I did not look at the histogram but i guess it looks very ruptured. Is it scanning or postprocess related?(if you know what I mean)
I have seen similar issues with some earlier shots of yours, and I think it is a pity coz the shots themselves as well as the ideas behind are good.

I also vote for tutorial, also what speed did you use as it looks like there are two vertical bands in the centre and the cron will be really uniform at f/16, unless you are not using a hood, otherwise it may be your shutter.
Only two of my leica style cloth shutters are uniform enough in the 1/30-1/60 range, for chrome film, one is a Zorki.

The banding is due to the scanner. It decided to do its own thing and the tonal ranges and histograms varied for each shot. That's why they're all a bit different. Blame Epson.

I used the Leica with a Summicron 50/2 coll at 1/125 or 1/60 I believe. F/16 or 22 or something. I didn't take a tripod with me, although I returned home with one!

Basically I stood in place and shifted my body 180degrees, using something in the shot to line up against the 50mm framelines each time - the dark banding shows the amount of overlap there was in some areas.


Pherdi, any artefacts are purely the fault of cheap chemicals and rushed end-processing (any blatant bits of dust are probably from the scanner being used by the whole family - too much static to clean properly). Blame the parents for not spending hundreds on a dust-free area for my equipment, drying cabinet, and constant running water for the wash 😉
