A few weeks ago I purchased a Yashica 635 from an estate sale off of ebay. It was a risk to say the least, as the seller knew virtually nothing about cameras. But it was worth it!!!!! The camera came in as mint conditon and worked flawlessly.
to the beginning of the sad: a couple of weeks ago i took it hiking with me, took some excellent shots, and then proceded to drop it. (the leather casing is held on by two inserts and those came out, then the camera fell out of the case.)
Seeing no cosmetic damage, I decided that I would give it a shot again today to see if everything was functional. It seemed sound, focus was dead on, winding fine, etc. and then I did it again! knocked it off of the edge of a picnic table!!!
well this time, there was definately aesthetic damage, as well as functional damage. The back of the camera is dented (where it flips up,) but should be repairable, and the hood that protects the ground glass is also damaged, making the opening and closing a little bit harder.
Of course, none of this will upset me, so long as the functionality of the camera still holds up well, as i think the aesthetic damage adds a little bit of character (character of my own, to boot!!!) to the camera.
Im souping the roll of film that I shot after the damage as we speak, so I'll be able to tell soon...
so I guess what im saying, is love your cameras and love them well... (try to treat them well too!)
oh, and wish me luck!

Good luck, Nicholas!

My M5s need red dots!
Well, Nick... you may want to hang on firmly to any camera you have from now on.
In any case, good luck! Just don't call it woes yet.

Thanks, guys... actually I got the order mixed up with the rolls... I dev'd the first one I shot... and the outcome was terribly poor, as for some reason, my method of winding the camera and cocking the shutter isnt very good... the 635, has separate mechanisms for advancing the film and cocking the shutter. needless to say I had about 4 images that were double exposed, and then a a few that werent exposed at all, too!
The system that I had read previously was to just make sure I advanced the film after every shot... and thats what I THOUGHT I was doing... but obviously not. so I guess Im going to try the: dont advance the film until youre ready for the shot, method. I should be able to remember that easier, that way If worse comes to worse, I will skip a frame, rather then double expose it and loose it.
The last roll was NPH, so I'll have to wait until I go to work on Thurs before I dev. it and see how things go.

WOW awesome portrait!
Looks like you might have a bit of grayness in the lower left corner? Beautiful shot though, very sharp, very detailed. AMAZING (if you ask me

My Rolleicord is my baby, I daren't leave it near the edge of a surface and it's ALWAYS in my bag if it isn't in my hand. I can't afford to drop it!
As for winding/cocking...I learnt that hard way too -
wind on after EVERY exposure, then cock the shutter.
That way you know you have an empty frame. I forgot once or twice with my Nettar folding 6x4.5 on the Equinox thing, prompted me to REMEMBER the above rule. Wind on, wind on!

Thanks guys, for the comments and hints...
about the grey, I'm not sure whether that is something to do with the camera itself, or whether it was just a bad scan (our negative holders are terrible!) or what else it could have been (maybe even my finger getting partially in the way, who knows!?!?!
Whisper, I will try to keep that in mind. thanks.

Shooter of Film...
Nic,
I recently looked for and found the leather case for my 124G...I covered the camera with it and also switched the strap off the camera to the case...
The tabs you're talking about do tend to back out...I'm looking for another way to secure the top of the camera in the case..the bottom attaches to the tripod mount...
I like the leather case and it will keep the body nick free...
