I'm a newbie in rangefinder. What's your style in using filter? With my Nikon SLR system, I purchase 77mm filters and use step-up ring to fit differnt sizes of lens.
In rangefinder shooting style, is it common to use step-up ring? Part of the reason to go rangefinder is to be inconspicuous. With the larger filter, would that make it less inconspicuous?

The larger filter assembly might call attention to the camera. However, another problem is that it may block a portion of the viewfinder frame.

A further problem -- with any camera -- is that a larger filter means a larger expanse of glass at the front, ready to do unwelcome things to the images that go through it. If the two threads of the step up ring are not precisely parallel, there can be all kinds of trouble.

Fortunately, the size of the glass is nothing to worry about. Neither is filter "alignment."
The only problem I can see is that is will block the viewfinder as was pointed out above.

How will you attach a hood to your oversized filter and have it have much effect on shielding extraneous light. ?
Large (77mm) filters are trouble for rangefinders which need no more than max 50mm or such filters, and often get away with 39mm filters. So, buy a new set of Helioplans SHC ones and enjoy. Actually I need no filters (plural) on my G2, just a MRC UV for protection.
So what are you doing with yours? Do not overload your RF with accessories; it will not improve your pics at all, is my thought here.

That makes sense. A yellow filter is what I'm thinking of. I'm buying the Zeiss Biogon 35/2 ZM which takes a 43mm filter. Some of the faster lens I'm planning to buy in the future like the Voigtlander 50mm f1.5 Nokton takes a larger filter size... Just trying to save a few bucks and avoid carrying more filter than necessary.
I don't like accessories, that's why I'm going rangefinder!
