Few people realize how much their life will change with parenthood.
More pressing needs will soon use time, energy and money you presently devote to photography.
Don't worry though; you won't miss it. You'll hardly give it a passing thought.
Once the dust settles, you will probably resume your photography.
But by then you may find what you want and need has changed.
My interest in photography didn't really revive until my daughter had started walking.
FWIW then I found my previously little-used 85/2 AI Nikkor lens to be indispensable!

So true. it is the hardest wonderful, fun, amazing thing you will ever experience. Most of the time you will want to shot photos you will stop to be a parent. It will seem so hard, but when you stop at the end you will smile and see how great the day was.
What camera will not be important. Being there and the shots you do get will be important.

I had a chance to buy one of the first 0.95's imported to this country in 1963 and passed on it in favor of a Kodak Retina Reflex III. Regretted the decision within a year but only now, 44 years later can I afford, again, to buy one (just did off of e-bay/$511). I am sure, had I known how long it would take.....
I was able to use the setup (Canon 7/0.95) for about 2 months before the store sold it to someone else and never got over it. I do a lot of macro/low light photography and this rig was a blast. Personally, I don't think this is a lens to run around with while imbibing and shooting a drinking buddy's wedding. What this lens performs to is a rock solid tripod, careful sutups and appropriate subject matter.
Naysayers, take note, if the desire moves ....

I wouldn't be using any money earmarked for the baby, though...it would all be coming from the sale of things I no longer need. It isn't really irresponsible.
We're NOT destitute. We have funds. I know that having a baby can be a financial burden, but we have money set aside already and it's growing well. We'll have everything we need. There's no reason I can't spend a couple hundred dollars on myself. It may be the last time I get to do it.

I suppose you could call the Canon 7 a hybrid if you want to get technical, but the only lens that uses its special mount is the monster.
As to knitting...yeah, I want to do that. I'd love to make my baby its first hat. The main problem is that I don't know if we're allowed to in the hospital I'll be using. I found some really nice natural cotton yarn, though. Really soft.

You knit the hats, gloves and sox n x times over between leaving work and going pop. Because the mite is soooooo smmmaaall it will feel the cold more than you, ditto if it is too warm.
You gotta think like a mum, e.g. do I feed or photo, change or photo, tickle or photo, or could I manage both?

We have a video camera, but we may end up with one of the hard drive models so that we can just make DVDs for everyone. It's more cost effective in the long run than the ones that run on tape. Course, that means I'll need a DVD drive for my computer, but that's no problem. I've been meaning to get one anyway.
The baby will be shot on film for most of its young life. When I do decide that it needs to be shot with a digital camera, Adam and I will go to the store and pick out the DSLR of our choice. That was my compromise. He wanted to go digital, but I said that it can't be some point & shoot. We're looking at the D40 as a compromise between price and features.
As to rangefinders, I'm going a slightly different route than the 7 for now. I'll get one sometime, but I'm getting a scanner and I'm wanting to play around a bit with medium format. I'm probably still selling my Nikon FE for two reasons. Number one: I'd like a Spotmatic instead. And number two: I really do like rangefinder focusing better.

No, my friend. You do not need a 7. I owned one. It's as glorious a camera as has ever existed, but the reality of what you need to shoot for the next decade has alreadu been determined. You will be shooting at as wide as possible at hyperfocal distances. I know this because I have done this. You will be chasing a child. You don't want to change schiess on the fly and you already know why.
I can say much more but we've had that discussion before. I'll only ask you remember it before doing anything major.

Presently you have a RF (Kiev) and an SLR (Nikon FE). You propose to sell the SLR and buy another RF.
IMO, you current gear would be more versatile than what you are going after. There are some things that slr's are better for, and close-ups (of babies for instance) is one of them.
