Recovering from disc surgery.

Soooo, I was in the hospital for herniated disc surgery and now recovering from it. The (microscopic) surgery took place yesterday and went well. Today they sent me home, a bit tired. But the good thing is that those nasty sciatica symptoms are gone. Just mildly aching muscles around the incisions, but that's normal. It feels like you've just had good physical exercise, a bit tense that is.

Good thing I got rid of the problem, I had it for 1 ½ years. Now it's just rest and walking exercises for me. The doctor prescribed me 4 weeks of sick leave and after that some physiotherapy. I'll have to arrange that with the local health station or my employer's medical associate. We'll see... Effectively, I'll return to my job in August, since my vacation takes place in July.

Anyone had similar surgery performed to you? Share your experiences!

It's amazing what the doctors can do nowadays, in particular re. microscopic surgery.

My mother had a similar operation recently - at the age of 70 - and it also went very well. She's slowly recovering now and can't wait to work in our back garden again!

My brother had a very similar surgery years ago. Took a little while to recover, but he said the same thing. Big relief from the pain he had been in for a long time. Now he plays a ton of golf and very competitive volleyball and is better than ever. Feel better.

I've had micro surgery for my knees. It may take a while for you to not notice. It took me a year. Now I have to stop and think which knee they operated on. To the point you will be a new person in August and next June you will have a fresh start all re-tuned and ready to go. Best of luck!

Jan, sure will do! I'm looking forward to improve my photography skills extensively this summer. It's also a good way to keep yourself fit, walking around the city and shooting away... I'm a postman by profession, so I'll have to compensate the lack of exercise anyhow. Walking doesn't really equal my daily two hours of mail delivery by bicycle, but it'll have to do...

Come to think of it, maybe I'll buy a MF folder and train with it. A Moskva, or maybe a Belfoca. I'm glad it's summer. 😎

It's a good feeling to recover from a surgery, you feel more alive than ever! Enjoy your vacation, take plenty of pictures, and don't forget to finish your physical therapy *completely*.

I heard too many stories of people neglecting it and setting up themselves for a repeat surgery.

I've had three bum discs in my back since I was in the Army about 8 years ago. It's now turned into degenerative disc disease and I'm currently waiting for my surgery. They'll be fusing two of my vertebrae. Not sure what they'll do with the third disc. They say fusing three vertebrae is too risky. I plan on bringing my 35RC and a ton of HP5 for my extended stay in the hospital. I figure it'll give me something to do. SO while I haven't been there, I'm headed 😉

Yes, but I didn't went through real surgury. Instead I was uner treatment by a special "back problems division" of the hospital. I passed a terrible time before treatment, and treatment (pills and injections) helped mildly.

So my orthopedist sent me to swim. I went to swim but it didn't help much either. I went back to him and he asked: how many times per week are you swimming ? Two times I answered. Oh Mr Ruben, try three times or four.

Since I started to swim three times per week, I felt like flying upon the floor. This made the real change.

Of course by swiming I mean with my back towards the water, and without any prefix amount of pools but according to my feeling.

It was a Palestinian Doctor, and at each visit to his clinic I was sitting with 20 Intifada injured boys around. A great man, Dr Husseini, cousin of the late Faysal al Housseini.

I haven't had any surgery but my back & left leg give me a fit quite often. My wife keeps saying go to a chiropractor, but I keep putting it off. Gotta tend to work and other things you know. Hope your recovery is going well and don't forget to carry a camera out on your walking exercises.

First I hope you heal quickly and well.
Second. I had the exact same surgery. The surgeon did not take proper care in placing the fat around the nerve root. I now have a crippled back and left leg. The scar tissue is slowing squeezing the sciatic nerve.
Needless to say, I'm in ten times worse pain than before.

When we stopped hanging from trees it was a big mistake, real sorry about the referenced pain, know just how it feels.

My physio, never recommended the surgery. I stepped off a motor cycle without stopping it, oh dear. Two years of 'we have the clickknowledgy we can rebuild you' was bad enough.

I have to visit the chiropractor every once-in-awhile and it does help...Three weeks ago I could barely stand straight up and walk and after two visits the PAIN was gone...
I have been going to him "off & on" for about 7 years and he has REALLY help with a Pinched Nerve in my upper back that I have had for many many years...
I do believe that the problem started from carrying a camera bag on that shoulder all these years...

Good luck on your recovery. I had some back issues about 12 years ago. Started weight training and yoga. No problems since. I even took photos in some of my yoga classes. I shall refrain from commenting on how attractive these women are.
