I just picked up a Rollei 35 SE from KEH. Very cool little camera but I'm a bit disappointed by how loud the shutter is. It's not SLR loud but it's not the gentle click I was expecting. It's sort of a springy sound. Is this pretty normal? It's about on par with my Olympus XA4 which also isn't too quiet. I guess I was expecting a more dampened sound from a higher end camera.

I've had several Rollei 35's and their shutter sounds varied quite a bit, but all were louder than the shutter of any Rollei TLR I've also had.

YMMV. My XA is about as loud as my Contax T and about as loud as
I remember my Rollei 35 was. Quieter than my Leicas, but a different sound.
Your camera is probably OK.
All three cameras above are high-end in different ways, just the used price
differs, independently. Wish I had a good XA4.

I have heard much quieter leaf shutters than the Rollei 35SE's. Your description sounds not unusual to me.

I'll have to shoot with it a bit and see how much attention it draws in quieter places. The XA I used to have seemed quieter than my current XA4. I'm wondering how something like the Yashica Electro 35 CC compares shutter sound wise. That was the other small carry anywhere I was considering. No manual control but a nice fast lens and a bit wider at 35 compared to the Rollei's 40.

Mine (35SE) seems quiet, but then I'm not all that good at hearing. Nor am I good at focussing the thing. The lens is a stunner tho when I manage to figure out how far away I am.
