1 1/2 Day's in Bangkok

Hi,

We are going on a 2 week trip to Burma (Myanmar).

On the way over we stop for 1 1/2 day's in Bangkok.
Arriving on december 31st at midnight 😀
Leaving on january 2nd in the afternoon.

Please keep in mind that we will be suffering Jetlag.

Any suggestions?

grand palace is phenomenal. chatuchak is cool. i'm a big fan of watching places wake up and if you're ok with being in the middle of a bunch of sex workers, going to patpong just before dusk and watching the girls come to work is fascinating and good photography. thai boxing is also great. i can't recall what the deal is with the stadiums, and which one has fights on what night.

best thing in town - breakfast on the terrace at the oriental. you're welcome. the chao phraya is the heart of the city and it's worth spending some time there.

second best thing in town - jim thompson house. it's so perfect.

If you are not locked into a hotel .... spend the night at the Oriental, once in a lifetime worth the cash.

Take a long tailed boat ride to the places mentioned above, dock right by Oriental.

Spend a bit of time in China town.

People watch on Patpong, Soi Cowboy or Soi Na Na, no need to go to the GoGo bars, but some very odd folks walking around.

For dinner Check out Cabbages and Condoms, Sukhumvit Soi 22 if memory servers. If not there, Sara Janes.

We have to carry our entire Burma vacation budget in cash since they don't have plastic money (yet)....

Hotel is already arranged, we are staying in the Westinn.

There are some international ATM's in Myanmar, they're there since a few months. They're hard to find and nobody knows that they're there. I only saw one in Yangon and you couldn't get a lot of cash. But they're there!

Change money at banks, it is saver then the black market and the exchange range isn't that different. You can change at the airport as the exchange rate is the same as downtown Yangon.

I can't tell you anything 'bout Bangkok (flew via Singapore), but to get you into the mood, a small sample:

Grand Palace have strict dress code.

Men must wear long pants and shirts with sleeves (no tank tops. If you're wearing sandals or flip-flops you must wear socks (in other words, no bare feet.) Women must be similarly modestly dressed. No see-through clothes, bare shoulders, etc. If you show up at the front gate improperly dressed, there is a booth near the entrance that can provide clothes to cover you up properly (a deposit is required).

don't take taxi which don't charge via meter (pretty common). tuk tuk might be more expensive compare to taxi at times.

Rogier, there is a lot of night life aound the Westin without a need to go to Patpong, Nana or Soi Cowboy to photograph prostitutes going to work — unless you're into this voyerestic or exploitative type of photography. Also, I would give the huge buffet breakfast at the Oriental a miss. Instead, you could take a walk early morning on the walking street starting at the River City antiques shopping mall into China Town. It's fairly well marked, so you needn't worry about getting lost. Along the way you'll find plenty of street food stalls or hole in the wall restaurants to have breakfast, such as congee or other types of food. Otherwise, look at any good guide book and do what interests you, whether it's the grand palace, sleeping Buddha, etc. — you can't go wrong.

Bangkok is a great place for holidays and vacations, One hotel that seems to have the best advantages of both planets is Shangri-la Hotel. It's on the most southern destinations expand of Chao Phraya, and it's the closest resort to Taksin BRT skytrain place.

I really liked our short stay in Bangkok. The Grand Palace was breath taking!
China town was amazing. Golden Buda on new years day an experience.

Will return for some more time and tailor made suits.
