This might be a stupid question, but I couldn't find any info online.

I was wondering if there is a camera which allows you to shoot film in 1.85:1 aspect ratio?

The closest seems to be 1.75:1 (the Xpan and probably a bunch of other cameras as well).

Thanks

That would be "flat" in cinema speak. Not that I know of - higher end cinemas had already proceeded to even wider formats before it became the standard for the bottom end of wide screen projection. And photographic wide formats already had a tradition of being at least 2:1, so there seems to have been a notion of "if you really need that, crop it" at that time.

I don't know of any camera that shoots in 1:85. BTW, my XPan gives a choice of standard 1.5:1 or in panoramic mode it gives a negative about 65mm wide x 24mm high. That works out to about 2.7:1.

If you are interested in shooting in 35mm, Wess-mounts (they're still made by another company) made a 1.85 mount. While this involves cropping the picture, you can shoot for the 1:85 format when composing. That's how they achieve 1.85 in the movies; the 1:85 "academy aperture" is masked down from the original frame height that used to be used when movies were 1.33:1. I make my own slide shoes using the 2:1 mounts from Wess or Gepe.

Another idea is to shoot 120 roll film in 645 format and mask down to the desired aspect ratio. I do that as well.
