I'm looking for a 11x17 or 12x17 flatbed for scanning analog prints, and cannot pop for a $2500 Epson (or even their $1200 "document" versions). I am also a little wary of buying used, since flatbeds are difficult to transport undamaged and shipping/return costs and effort are way too high.

I've heard nightmare tales of the cheap Musteks, but what about using one of these cheaper multifunctions like the Epson WF-7510 with their built-in 11x17 CIS-based scan beds? I know it's a long shot, but has anyone tried it for photos? Any other ideas? Thanks .

I don't know the number of scans you are intending to make.. if the number is small would it be cost effective to just get them scanned?

No, I am printing in my darkroom often and getting away from scanning film, so I need one to own, unfortunately 🙂

I don't think CIS scanners are good enough for photographic purposes. You might want to have a look at the distinctive Fujitsu ScanSnap SV600. It's meant for book scanning but it does feature a CCD.

Thanks. Reviews say it's not good for art work, and it looks like a nightmare for fiber prints, which do not lay flat even after pressing. I think I need a traditional flatbed.

Do you have any samples you've scanned with it?

Never mind - I bit the bullet and got a reasonable local deal on a used 10000XL. It has the transparency unit, so I can now also make full page batch-preview scans from my film.
