12585 Leitz Hood -- Unscrewed, like 12504

I've just found that my 12585 Leitz Hood -- old version with just 5 lenses engraved -- is missing its front part, the actual hood.

I didn't even know that it would unscrew very much like the 12504 (except the correct diameter), anyways, the vented hood part is lost.

On the fastening part now visible is a male thread of probably 46mm diameter.

I guess there's little chance that I find the actual hood anymore, hence my question:

Can you recommend me what to do with that relic?

*If* the Chinese make their 46mm tilted-vented hood for $5 with a *female* thread, this could work like a charm, I presume -- but they make only those with a *male* thread, I guess?

Sounds good, basically, but would be very uneconomic, since I would need an original specimen before I start the printing process, I suppose ...

It was made to accept Series VI filters. Not sure what you can use it for now.

Thank you, I wasn't aware of that feature!

I know the 12504 does accept Series VII filters, but I obviously never tried to unscrew the 12585 voluntarily. My bad.

The 12585 isn't designed to accept a filter like the 12504. The hood portion will separate from the mount though.
It happened to me once after a fairly serious impact.
Luckily I was able to get them back together. A small drop of clear nail polish on the threads and it's been fine ever since.
Unless you feel like dropping a ton of cash on a replacement 12585, I'd snag a 39mm screw in from ebay. I've got a few and they work great.

Hm. *Serious impact* -- I guess I should have a word with my children about what happened -- but presumably they'll blame the youngest one, even if he didn't touch my camera stuff at all...

I assume most of them are manufactured in China, but there are sellers from all over. I don't remember where mine came from exactly, but it was somewhere in the states.
Just search 39mm vented lens hood. There are tons of options.

Such a female threaded thing they don't make indeed.

Now you're in for a $5 Chinese screw-in 39mm tilted-vented lens hood. They're nice enough and CNC one-piece machined.

You are correct, I got my hoods mixed up. The 12504 Hood unscrews to hold a Series VI filter, the Series VI filter is held in 12585 Hood by clips. I have both hoods (multiples of each) and got the mixed up. The 12585 with a red series VI filter is currently installed on my M4, glancing at it earlier I though the filter was retained by the hood, not the hood's internal clips.

I have a few of the 12504 & 12585 hoods but I can never find one when I need it (I'm a very organized person). I bought one of those Chinese hoods and was so pleased I bought another half dozen in various sizes (39mm, 40mm, 46mm and some more).

I hear you... My house has at least four actual nursery rooms (plus several inofficial play-rooms which the children just usurp) where cameras, cufflinks, wrist watches, fountain pens, and many similar things happen to re-appear, sometimes after a week, sometimes after a year...

Thinking about the need for a female thread on the hood; it should be easy to saw, grind etc the male thread off and most competent technicians ought to have the gizmo to cut a 39M x 0.75 female thread in it. After all, it's the thread needed for the lens etc.

And the Chinese ones are so cheap it isn't going to break the bank.
